3 Foods To Avoid To Prevent Constipation During Ramzan

Ramazan brings changes to our daily routine, including eating patterns, sleep cycles, and physical activity levels. These shifts can sometimes lead to digestive issues, including constipation. While not going to the bathroom daily doesn’t necessarily mean you’re constipated, certain food choices can contribute to the problem. Nutritionist Fareeha Jay shares three key dietary habits to avoid during Ramazan to maintain smooth digestion.

1. Cut Down on Fried Foods – No surprises there!

Fried foods such as samosas, pakoras, parathas, and puris are a staple of Ramzan meals, but consuming them in excess can slow down digestion and contribute to constipation. These foods are high in unhealthy fats, which can slow bowel movements. Instead, opt for baked or grilled alternatives and focus on incorporating fiber-rich foods into your meals.

If you’re experiencing irregular bowel movements, perhaps a slight change in your menu will help relieve some discomfort. O

2. Avoid Refined Carbohydrates – It’s hard but the rewards are immense!

Refined carbs like white bread, white-flour chapatis, and sugary processed foods lack fiber, which is essential for healthy digestion. When you consume refined grains, they can contribute to sluggish digestion and constipation. Instead, choose whole grains such as whole-wheat chapatis, brown rice, and fiber-rich legumes to aid digestion and prevent discomfort.

3. Limit Sugary Foods – We know you know, so this is just a gentle reminder

During Ramzan, the craving for sweets increases, especially at Sehri and Iftar. However, excessive sugar intake can disrupt digestion and contribute to constipation. Processed sweets and sugary drinks should be minimized, and natural sources of sweetness, such as dates, fruits, and honey, should be prioritized to maintain a balanced diet.

Additional Considerations

For some individuals, certain vegetables—especially raw ones—can be difficult to digest and may contribute to constipation. Additionally, foods like chana chaat and lobia chaat, while highly nutritious, can cause digestive discomfort if not part of your regular diet. Gradually introducing fiber-rich foods and ensuring adequate hydration can help prevent these issues.

By making mindful dietary choices, you can maintain healthy digestion throughout Ramadan and avoid constipation. Staying hydrated, eating fiber-rich foods, and balancing your meals will help keep your digestive system running smoothly during this holy month.
