Aik Aur Pakeezah swings from dark, despair mode to uplifting, hopeful mode in a matter of seconds. Take for instance, Akbar visiting Pakeeezah, warning her that she shouldn’t take money from Yasin, then Pakeezah, refusing to sign the settlement, then Aliya showing up at the IO’s office to lend her support to her daughter, then Saman hugging Noor Bhari… just after she related her tragic life story…it’s all happpening here and we’re glad the makers are holding our hand along the way, almost whispering, don’t lose hope, you’re prayers will be answered.
Here’s why last night’s episode struck a chord and delivered moments that scored high on the positivity scale.
1. Pakeezah refusing to sign the settlement deal
And just like that, Pakeezah announced that she won’t be signing on the dotted line. What gave pleasure in that moment was not just Pakeezah’s refusal but also Yasin’s bewildered expression. The earlier arrogance and smugness vanished in a split second as Aliya turned up, (did y’all note the slight smile on Saman’s lips), adding to Yasin’s pain by stating that they will continue to pursue the case. We were hoping it would happen, but it’s in the ‘how’ that the screenplay wins points – a vicarious kind of pleasure, is what we felt on the other side of the screen. You know what we mean!
2. Rubina appearing at the IO’s office to support her daughter
This scene was the cherry on top. When Aliya sat down next to Pakeezah, reached out and held her hand and then stated in no uncertain terms, looking everyone straight in the eye – “we will not take the money, nor withdraw the case.” Pakeezha’s expressions said it all. This is what she needed, this support, reassurance, belief from her mother was all the power she needed. Not just that, but even the IO seemed to have shifted his stance with Yasin after this guest appearance from Aliya – there is something about mothers that moves the toughest hearts and the IO seems to be in sync.
3. Saman hugging Noor Bhari
Saman lending an ear to Noor Bhari’s lifestory, her first husband’s death, her terminated pregnancy and the tears that needed to flow, was the perfect picture of a woman supporting another without question – unspoken sisterhood that heals everything with a tight hug, no words, just a feeling that she understands. Noor Bhari needed to release the pain inside her and Saman, true to her character, went above and beyond, the garb of a second wife lifting from her conscience as she reached out to another woman who had been wronged – a beautifully scripted and enacted scene that left audiences wiping their tears.
4. Aliya tickling Pakeezah to make her laugh
Aliya teasing and then forcing a smile out of Pakeezah was the ultimate high we needed from the episode. As she noted the birds and open sky above her, Aliya seemed to have broken free from the self imposed chains she had bound herself in as the mother of a daughter – just like the sky and birds above. Appreciating her daughter’s appearance, her eyes, then telling her that she has a bright future ahead by reading her palm, then praising her laughter, tickling her to make her laugh out loud – it was a prize moment that won hearts every second. You made us wait for it, but the wait was sure worth it.
5. Asim relieved that Pakeezah hadn’t signed the settlement
Asim’s relief was tangible, his confusion, relatable. This character adds the smile to our Aik Aur Pakeezah watch as he scratches his head over Pakeezah’s ‘bipolar family’ and just visisbly elated that she did not withdraw the case. Asim telling Pakeezah he will need therapy after this case, that her family is confounding him, that there was an undercover plan he’ was not aware of… this was the humour we needed – Asim’s comic timing is on point and it hits us right in the feels.
