5 Reasons Why ‘If Wishes Could Kill’ Deserves A Spot On Your Netflix Watchlist

K-drama If Wishes Could Kill takes a pretty simple idea, a wish-granting app, and turns it into something creepy, emotional and honestly kind of stressful in the best way possible. The show follows a group of high school students whose wishes begin coming true through a mysterious app called Girigo, only for them to realise there’s a deadly countdown attached to it.

It could’ve easily become another predictable teen horror drama, but the series actually does a lot more than that. Here’s why people are getting hooked to it already and why you should give it a try!

1. The concept is weirdly addictive and interesting

A cursed app that grants wishes sounds like something every teenager would try “just once,” which is exactly what makes the story work. The danger feels close enough to reality that it becomes unsettling pretty fast

The countdown element also keeps the tension going constantly. Once somebody makes a wish, there’s this pressure hanging over every scene because you know something bad is probably coming. It makes even normal school moments feel uncomfortable in a good way.

2. It mixes genres instead of sticking to basic horror

One thing the series does well is that it doesn’t rely only on jump scares or gore. There’s horror, obviously, but it also mixes in school drama, mystery, action and even occult themes.

The director apparently wanted the story to feel immersive rather than just scary for the sake of it, and honestly that shows. The episodes don’t drag because there’s always something shifting — friendships, secrets, the curse itself, or the mystery around where the app actually came from.

3. The cast actually works together really well

A horror series like this completely falls apart if the friend group has no chemistry, but thankfully that’s probably one of the strongest things here.

Jeon So-young as Yoo Se-ah brings a grounded energy to the show. Her character could’ve become overly serious very quickly, but instead she feels believable and emotional without making every scene heavy. There’s also this natural protectiveness in the way she acts toward her friends that makes you root for her. Kang Mi-na’s character, Na-ri, adds another layer because she’s more skeptical , which balances the group dynamic nicely. The rest of the cast also feels surprisingly natural together, especially during the smaller school scenes where they’re just talking or teasing each other.

4. The mystery slowly pulls you in

The app is dangerous from the start, but there’s clearly history behind it and other people connected to the curse. Little details start piling up -old incidents, strange warnings, the shaman storyline — and it slowly becomes bigger than just one group of students messing around with a creepy app.

That slower mystery-building makes the series bingeable because every episode feels like it’s hiding something.

5. It’s more emotional than expected

Underneath all the scary stuff, the show is also about pressure, loneliness, friendship and the things teenagers secretly wish for. That’s probably why the premise works so well. The wishes aren’t huge world-changing things most of the time. They either source from insecurity, jealousy, love or wanting to escape something, making the consequences hit harder because they feel personal.

If Wishes Could Kill isn’t trying to reinvent horror completely, but it does enough differently to stand out from a lot of other teen thrillers on streaming right now. If you like darker K-dramas with mystery, tension and emotionally messy characters, this one’s probably worth adding to your list.

Disclaimer: The series contains horror themes, violence, disturbing scenes and psychological tension, so it may not be suitable for younger viewers. It feels more aimed toward teens 15+ and above rather than a casual family watch.
