The New Year has just begun but we’re already excited for the upcoming movies we’ll get to watch in the following months! 2021 saw an influx of new releases at the cinema. Pakistani cinemas reopened post-pandemic with full swing, with films such as Spider-man: No Way Home, making huge sums at the box office. Our producers assuredly took the hint and are ready to entertain the audience with fresh desi content in 2022!

This year there is something for everyone! Here we present you with seven upcoming Pakistani movies, all set to release in the year 2022.
1. Dum Mastam – The Rom-Com We Need
A light-hearted rom-com, Dum Mastam is all set to release in 2022, though the official date for this upcoming movie has not yet been disclosed. The film is directed by Mohammed Ehteshammuddin who also directed Superstar starring Mahira Khan and Bilal Ashraf. It will star Imran Ashraf and Amar Khan who are two big names of our industry and will also be making their big-screen debut with this film. Amar Khan has also penned the story of the film. She has already written many scripts previously, one of them being Black Wednesday which was premiered at American Film Showcase. Dum Mastam’s ensemble cast has a lot going for it – watch it for Sohail Ahmed, Saleem Mairaj, Adnan Shah Tipu, Momin Saqib and others in significant roles.

It will also be the debut of Adnan Siddiqui as a producer. He will be producing the movie alongside Akhtar Hasnain under the banner of Cereal Entertainment. The poster of the film was launched at HUM Style Awards where the audience was treated with a performance by Imran Ashraf and Amar Khan. Take a look:

2. Javed Iqbal – The Spine-Chilling Movie About A Pakistani Serial Killer
Javed Iqbal is the true story of serial killer Javed Iqbal who murdered over 100 boys over a period of 6 months during the period of 1998 and 1999. He confessed to the killing of street and beggar children, sexually assaulting them before they were murdered, strangling them to death, and then dismembering their bodies to dispose of the pieces in acid.

Yassir Hussain will play the role of Javed Iqbal while we also see Ayesha Omar playing a police officer who is investigating the case. The blood-curdling trailer stops your breath for a second and it takes you a moment or two to digest the hard-hitting realities of our society which we brush under the rug just because they are topics we do not consider ‘fit for discussion’. Frames switch at a fast pace; action sequences are interspersed with images of Yasir Hussain playing Javed Iqbal – dark, bleak, sinister, and deeply disturbing. Yasir Hussain’s whimper, in the end, sends chills down our spine. The movie is directed and written by Abu Aleeha and is produced by Javed Ahmed.
The movie is set to release in cinemas on 28th January 2022. Watch the trailer here:

3. Ghabrana Nahi Hai- Saba Qamar Returns To Cinemas
Starring Saba Qamar and Zahid Ahmed, the film is a blend of drama, romance, and comedy. It is directed by Saqib Khan who also directed Mohay Bhool Gaye Sawariya (2017) starring Bushra Ansari, Fatima Shah Jillani, and others. The film will also star Saleem Mairaj and Nayyar Ejaz. It is written by the multi-talented actor and director Mohsin Ali who has previously written Wrong No. and Chhuppan Chhuppai.

The film is all set to release in Eid-ul-Fitr. Produced by Jamil Baig and Hassan Zia, the film seems to have a promising narrative. As of now, the audience is teased with only a forty-eight seconds trailer which held our attention. From the trailer we can assume that Zahid Ahmed will be playing the role of a police officer and the movie is going to depict a power struggle between good and evil. The character of Saba is still veiled behind the shadows but we can definitely expect glamour with a touch of drama – which is nothing but Saba.

6. Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad- A Full Package Of Action & Romance
Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad is another movie that was all set to hit the cinemas in 2020. However, its release got delayed due to the pandemic and now we are anticipating watching it in cinemas in 2022. It is the brainchild of the creative duo Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza who have previously given us many hits including Na Maloom Afraad, Actor In Law, Load Wedding and most recently Khel Khel Mein. They are known for the distinctive touch they add to their movies, with a fusion of entertainment and social messaging that is not so in your face.

The teaser of the film was released back in 2020 and had us hooked! Starring Fahad Mustafa and Mahira Khan, this film will mark their first project together. The teaser is what we expect from Nabeel Qureshi- action, drama, larger than life sequences that capture our attention, dance sequences galore!
A single dialogue was enough to overwhelm the viewer, leaving them something to think about. Fahad Mustafa’s dialogue in the end “Jaantey ho noton pey Quaid e Azam ki tasveer kyun hai” with Quaid-e-Azam’s picture in the front elevated our expectations and excitement making us believe that there is a lot to look forward to with this one.
Needless to say, Fahad Mustafa looks every bit the hero in the film giving us ‘Dabangg’ vibes and Mahira looked stunning as always. The film will release on Eid-ul-Adha 2022.
7. Zindagi Tamasha (Circus Of Life)- Finally Gets A Release Date In Pakistan
After numerous setbacks in Pakistan due to political and religious reasons, the movie Zindagi Tamasha is set to release in March 2022. The movie is Directed and co-produced by Sarmad and Kanwal Khoosat and written by Nirmal Bano. It stars Arif Hassan, Eman Suleman, Samiya Mumtaz and Ali Kureshi.
The film has won many awards globally. It was premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in 2019 and was the first Pakistani film to win the prestigious Kim Ji-Seok Award at the festival. It was also Pakistan’s official film entry in the International Feature Film Award category for the 93rd Academy Awards in 2020 and received the Snow Leopard Award for Best Film at the 6th Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) in 2021.
The teaser which has been re-released on YouTube touches on a sensitive subject in Pakistan where Muslims who actively participate in religious activities are set on a high pedestal and are meant to make no mistakes. It narrates the story of such a man who is a devout Muslim and his life turns upside down when a video of him dancing gets recorded at a wedding and is posted on social media.
The trailer had us hooked like no other. It rightly represents the effort put in by the team to make such a masterpiece. We hope that the movie has a peaceful release in March and the audience gets to enjoy the craft that the team has orchestrated.
