The details according to police indicate that the little girl was named Muntaha and belonged to Class 2. She had left her home on 22nd June to purchase some items for her home from the local grocery shop situated at Karkhana Bazar area. The girl did not return to her home after that and her family immediately started looking for her along with other local people.

The CCTV footage revealed that the little girl had entered the grocery store but didn’t leave it. In course of the investigation, her dead body was recovered from the upper floor of the building by the police.

According to an official press release issued by the police, two individuals who were employed at the store have been arrested for interrogation after preliminary findings suggested that the child could have been lured away. There is evidence gathered from the site of crime, but the investigators require results from the post-mortem report to conclude anything.

The body of the victim has been sent to the hospital for conducting an autopsy. It is important to note that according to the law enforcement agency, the exact nature of the incident would come to light after the investigation. This tragic incident has caused outrage among social media users and civil society organizations, with many expressing condolences to the family and demanding swift justice. Child rights activists have yet again asked for more security for children against any form of violence and abuse.

Crimes Against Minors in Pakistan: Legal Framework and Punishments

Crimes involving sexual violence against minors are among the most serious offences under Pakistani law. Under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), rape is punishable by death, life imprisonment, or lengthy imprisonment along with fines. The law further provides enhanced punishment where the victim is a minor, with rape of a child carrying penalties that may include death or life imprisonment. Gang rape and rape resulting in severe injury or death also attract the harshest punishments available under the law. Additionally, the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act 2021 established special procedures and courts aimed at ensuring faster investigations and trials in rape and child sexual abuse cases.

There have been quite a few incidents in Pakistan where child abuse and murder took place and the perpetrators were successfully punished by law. The most prominent incident in recent years is the rape and murder of six-year-old Zainab Ansari that occurred in Kasur in 2018. After a public outcry across the nation, Imran Ali, the accused, was arrested using forensic evidence and DNA, convicted by an Anti-Terrorism Court, and given multiple death sentences along with life imprisonment.

Other cases, including incidents in Kasur, Lahore, and Islamabad, have similarly intensified public demands for stronger enforcement of child protection laws. Despite tougher legislation, child rights activists still emphasize issues of reporting obstacles, poor investigations, and delayed prosecutions. It is the view of legal professionals that although there are strict laws in Pakistan that provide severe punishments for abusers, it is critical to have preventive measures in place in order to protect children.

As the investigation into Muntaha’s death continues, authorities have advised the people against any sort of speculation and to let the forensic and legal processes find out the truth. In any case, this incident has brought up an important discussion in the nation regarding the safety of children.

This is a developing story.
