8 drama scenes that impressed us this week is back. Take a look at what made the cut before we head on to the next week – more episodes and more stories! Here’s what needs a special shout out!

1. Pamaal

Malika roaming lost in a wide expanse, a deserted landscape, with Raza calling out her name was an aesthetically placed scene that portrayed Malika’s sense of helplessness and deep shock – almost as if she was slipping into a void from where she had no escape. The sense of abandonment and isolation was spine-chilling, and Raza’s voice, calling her from a distance, carried a sense of painful belonging – one Malika and audiences knew she must leave behind soon.

2. Biryani

When Nisa and Meeran spoke this time, it was almost as if they had come full circle. Their love story; from getting to know each other, strangers to enemies to lovers and then back again to a fragile friendship that wouldn’t stand the test of the intense emotions raging within their hearts. But what was so refreshing about the conversation was the non-toxic coming to terms of two people, especially Nisa, that they must move on without each other, forgive, and heal, no longer looking back, but going forward in their respective lives. The pain of heartbreak was real, and yet, this was a first in Pakistani dramas where a couple accepted their paths would have to diverge and although the conversation was sad, it carried a calmness and maturity that sent out deep messages to young couples watching. This too, can be love. The kind we often miss out in dramas.

3. Biryani

When Baba Saeen and Amma Saeen questioned Gul Meher and Meeran, it was an uncomfortable conversation on the damage and trauma that cousin (and child) marriage inflicts upon those whose communities have normalized it. From Gul Meher reminiscing how Meeran was like a younger brother, to Meeran talking about treating her like an older sister, the conversation was lost upon the older generation as they struggled to understand a concept that was part of their’s and their ancestors lifestyle for generations – just because no one questioned it didn’t mean it was right – but the old guard refused to give in. That too was a relatable moment as both parents fought Meeran and Gul Meher’s resistance with anger and disdain. Isn’t that how they were expected to react? Anything less would have been too farfetched or too good to be true. Change is hard to break, epseically for those who blaze the trail – Meeran and Gul Meher might have refused to give in, but they have a tough time ahead.

Meeran and Gul Meher’s words, though they fell on deaf ears onscreen, certainly called out to all of us watching – cousin marriage is a practice followed widely across our cultures, it does not belong to any particluar language, class, ethnicity or community – it transgresses education (as we see in Baba Saeen’s case), because it lives in our psyche as the right thing to do when children must marry and procreate – the mantra that all things stay in the family, including marriage – means comfort, convenience, a financially sound future for our children but at what cost?

4. Jinn Ki Shadi Unki Shadi

Jinn Ki Shadi Unki Shadi closed on a high note and even as fans speculate a season 2, it was a fun watch right to the end. When Khushi’s friends appeared in their room all of a sudden on the wedding night, Ali was rightly taken aback and gave us all reasons to smile, once more!

5. Jama Taqseem

Sidra telling off Ejaz and behaving aggressively towards him was a poignant reminder that she wasn’t over her ordeal. Sidra might be physically safe from Zeeshan but her trauma continues in the emotional scars she bears from its aftermath. She needs help through therapy or an older, mature adult who can explain to her that all men are not like Zeeshan – trust will come with great difficulty for Sidra and she needs help along the way – planning an early marriage is the last thing she needs right now and her internal scars were apparent in this scene.

6. Case No. 9

Sehar recording a video to post on social media was a heartfelt moment. Saba Qamar shone as a rape survivor’s story was made public, despite her not wanting to bring it out in the open, her tone, expression and delivery – balanced yet subtle emotions, were deeply impactful. The camera angle, where one could see her parents and brother Saad’s reflection in the mirror and Malika recording the video through the open door, spoke volumes as every expression added a distinct layer to the storytelling.

7. Case No. 9

Beenish’s incisive cross examination, confusing the witnesses, making them fumble, nervous and causing them to make errors while giving their testimony was the highlight of the episode. The edits added to the suspense and revealed the crookery behind the entire scam which was Bukhari and Kamran’s plan. The win for Beenish and Seher was subtle and not overplayed which made the entire scene even more impactful.

8. SharPasand

When Sanam met Fida and finally told him that she had had enough of his attitude, it was a refreshing take on a relationship stalemate. Despite audiences feeling for Fida, one also felt he was being unfair to Sanam and here, after she had been through the pain and torture of him walking away, begging him to return, Sanam had finally had enough. Her anger and frustration was rightly relatable and also portrayed her sense of self respect, keeping to the character that was projected to us so far – Sanam could be madly in love with Fida, but she would know when she has to take a step back and this conversation seemed to draw the line.

A very well performed scene by both Hareem Farooq and Affan Waheed, placed at just the right time in the story – not too soon, and not too late, hence it hit the spot.

Agree on all points. But as for Nisa and Meeran accepting that they would have to part in that scene, it’s not the first time it has been seen. It happened in Pehli Si Mohabbat as well.
