A little old and a little new but a little disappointing! Read on to know what we thought of Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s new rom – com ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar.’

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar – Shraddha Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor

The film came in waves to us – waves of comedy, waves of boredom, waves of disappointment and waves of awe. It’s the usual boy meets girl, falls in love (too soon), wants to marry her! In comes the equation; the family factor and well, there’s not much more left to be guessed…

Sneak Peek Into The Story

Ranbir Kapoor (“Micky” or Rohan Arora) lives in a close knit family and falls in love with Shraddha Kapoor (Tinni Malhotra) on vacation in Budapest, who, on the other hand is highly independent and has worked for her independence and is not willing to compromise it. What endangers their relationship is how excited Micky’s family is and how closely bonded they are.

What We Thought Of The Performances

The cast is stellar! Absolutely no qualms about that. This was supposedly Ranbir Kapoor’s new romcom after Yeh Jawani Hai Dewaani! We had missed Ranbir’s goofy lover boy persona on screen and the movie did particularly remind us why we missed it, albeit too late, in the second half. Shraddha’s fresh cool girl role was fun and different, maybe a little cringe at some points! But their chemistry was definitely present yet left unexplored perhaps because it was very surface level. However, Shraddha’s acting was not over the top and was stable with thankfully, no fluctuations between the scenes.

Are we a little biased when we say we loved Dimple Kapadia’s role and performance? She delivered the typical loud Punjabi mother who is a stand-a-lone, full dose of comedy. She left us wanting to see more of her in future. Anubhav Singh Bass as Dabas (Ranbir’s best friend) was just the right amount of extra loud and satirically funny – the relatable best friend who is your partner in crime but grills you like no other. Boney Kapoor’s role was the most puzzling, he was barely there. Jatinder Kaur who played the grandmother is absolutely witty and adorable. There were also two cameos by Kartik Aryan and Nusrat Bharucha.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar Is A Lost Love Story

What could have been THE movie of the season was more of a lost opportunity. The narrative set its first half in the scenic views of Europe, where the love story took root, was almost fast forwarded and forced. The star of the first half? Ranbir Kapoor’s abs because the romance quotient was too quick, too corny and too soon. Disappointing our expectations of a gripping vacation love story.

Redemption

The second part perhaps did more justice to the movie in terms of acting, the development of the story line and the progression of the pace. The story clearly evolved with a focus on the central role desi families play in the happening of a marriage – A very real and relatable take on joint families which a lot of desi audiences could relate to – how, in reality, one is not unrealistically willing to give up everything for each other as opposed to what the movies show us. Also, some essential lessons for families – how it’s okay to show affection to your partner in front of your family and at the same time bring back the positive essence of the good that joint families can give us.

Another takeaway that we particularly liked was around one dialogue Dimple Kapadia’s character said about how “families should be the solution for one’s life” and that was so beautifully delivered. Families should be your support system, always there to support you, not make your life more difficult.

A Head’s Up

Though just a heads up, if you thought a guy rushing to stop the girl at the airport is dramatic, wait for the level up in dramatics! What specifically bothered us was how and why Shraddha’s character could not talk the problems out with Ranbir’s character. Are we being conveyed that a relationship as close as marriage is still not enough of a safe space to talk about possible issues and grievances? Is it just that easy to be willing to walk away?

Missing The Tunes

What are Bollywood movies without kick-ass music? We really expected some hype songs to dance to this shaadi season but the music apart from one song, was quite lackluster. Though, a smooth reminder of Ranbir’s dance skills and a partial glimpse of the Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani glory. Some shots were reminiscent of some of the best Ranbir Kapoor romances.

What’s your take on vacation love stories and joint families? If you want a light watch with no crazy high expectations, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar would be a watch for you.
