Laapataa Ladies is a refreshing, Gen Z-friendly film full of “green flags,” showcasing emotional maturity, independence, and healthy relationships that break free from outdated norms.

Laapataa Ladies is a refreshing watch that’s filled with “green flags.” For Gen Z, these green flags are a total game-changer. In a world where we’re all about authenticity and breaking old patterns, this film introduces Jaya, Deepak, and Phool, who break free from toxic norms and embrace respect, empowerment, and independence.
It’s the kind of film that feels like a breath of fresh air, showing that healthy relationships and personal growth are the real deal, making it the perfect watch for anyone who values the green flags in life.
1. Phool – A Reflection Of Resilience
Phool’s journey in Laapataa Ladies is a powerful testament to resilience, courage, and self-discovery. Abandoned by her husband Deepak during a train journey, Phool found herself alone and vulnerable in an strange place. Despite the hardships she faced, including trusting strangers for shelter, her love for Deepak remained unwavering. As she navigated her new life, Phool’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed when she helped Manju Maai at her stall. Her creativity, and ability to overcome obstacles not only helped her survive but also led her to find strength in difficult times.
Phool’s character arc also highlights the importance of learning from others and adapting to life’s challenges (and not to cry on the slightest inconvenience. I should take notes). While initially proud of her upbringing, Phool humbly accepts Manju Maai’s guidance, learning valuable life lessons in the process. Her transformation is a powerful reflection of the potential to grow and change when faced with adversity. As Phool reclaims her independence and decides to start her own venture after reuniting with Deepak, she embraces boldness and confidence in a way that symbolizes true empowerment. Her story, much like Jaya’s, demonstrates how losing oneself can lead to finding a truer self, with each encounter and challenge along the way shaping her into a more courageous and self-assured individual.
The last scene is powerful considering the environment she’s been brought up in. Even during the scene where Deepak’s mother utter shock at just the thought of taking her husband’s name is unimaginable to her. At the station when Phool calls out for Deepak, the very last scene, we knew the movie broke the years long cultural setup of the subcontinent.
2. Jaya AKA Pushpa – Writing Her Own Destiny
Jaya’s character in Laapataa Ladies is a fascinating journey empowerment. Initially, she is introduced under a veil of mystery, as she’s mistakenly taken by Phool’s husband, Deepak, and hides her true identity under the name “Pushpa.” The early part of the film casts doubt on Jaya’s motives, making her appear to have an ulterior agenda. However, as the story unfolds, we realize that her deceptive actions are a response to the oppressive circumstances she finds herself in. Jaya was forcibly married to a widower, whose first wife died under suspicious circumstances, likely due to domestic violence. Her true goal is to escape this stifling marriage and pursue her dreams of education and independence, particularly in the field of agriculture, a passion she has nurtured despite societal constraints.
The moment when Jaya, hidden under a ghoonghat, seizes the opportunity to pursue her dreams exemplifies her agency. She cleverly understands the risks of revealing her true identity, as it would lead to her swift capture by the authorities, thanks to the missing brides’ FIRs filed by both Deepak and her own family. Yet, instead of remaining passive, Jaya actively takes control of her fate. One of the most powerful scenes in the film is when Jaya advises on tackling a pesticide problem using sticky traps, a solution taught to her by her father, reflecting her sharp mind and hands-on experience. Her growth throughout the film speaks to the broader theme that women, while often competing to carve out space in a patriarchal society, can also be allies who support and uplift each other.
In the end she breaks free and lives life on her own terms.
Deepak – Learning Point For Gen Z
Deepak in Laapataa Ladies is a deeply nuanced character whose growth and emotional depth stand in stark contrast to traditional portrayals of men in films. He is a refreshing portrayal of a man who isn’t defined by toxic masculinity (no ‘Animal’ was harmed, Ranbir Kapoor if you’re reading this, sorry). Deepak doesn’t see women as mere objects or props, which is especially evident when he brings home the “wrong bride.” While the movie focuses on Phool’s empowerment and self-discovery, Deepak’s character provides a crucial, grounding balance. He represents a kind of man who, while not overtly vocal about societal issues like gender equality or feminism, still embodies these principles through his actions and emotional intelligence.
Deepak also stands out for his emotional sensitivity and responsibility. His journey might not be as loud as Phool’s, but it is equally significant. He feels deeply (we love emotionally aware men), takes accountability for his actions, and strives to make things right, especially in his relationship with Phool and his responsibility toward others like Jaya. Deepak is a symbol of hope and emotional stability for the women around him, especially Phool and Pushpa, acting as a supportive ally in their journeys toward empowerment.
Ultimately, his character serves as a tribute to the many good men such as fathers, brothers, who are quietly supportive, empathetic, and emotionally mature—reminding us that not all men contribute to the oppression of women – many actively support them.
Why They’re Green Flags, Especially for Gen Z
Collectively, these characters inspire Gen Z to be unapologetically themselves, to challenge conventional expectations, and to value emotional maturity and empowerment in their journey toward personal success. Laapataa Ladies isn’t just a movie for Gen Z, it’s a wake-up call. It’s about breaking free from those old-school patriarchal practices that don’t serve anyone. We have a lot to learn. The way Deepak respects women and takes emotional responsibility (such a relief from red flags), the way Phool creates her own path, and how Jaya takes charge of her life are lessons that can help break the cycle of outdated gender roles and encourage healthier, more open-minded relationships and conversations.
The movie Laapata Ladies is a must-watch for Gen Z because it challenges societal norms while celebrating individual choices. It beautifully portrays that there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to live as a woman—whether it’s prioritizing marriage and respecting your partner or choosing to focus on education and personal aspirations. The film emphasizes the importance of autonomy, teaching viewers that every woman has the right to make her own decisions and define her own happiness. It’s a refreshing reminder that societal expectations are not universal truths, and embracing your choices unapologetically is what truly matters.
It’s safe to say that Laapataa Ladies is a blueprint for how Gen Z and the older generations (hello Millennials) can work together to break down patriarchal walls, embrace emotional intelligence, and uplift one another in a journey toward equality and self-empowerment.
