An image with the text “All eyes on Rafah” has been widely shared on Instagram, appearing in every other story and becoming a major topic in discussions about Israel’s deadly war in Gaza. This image has been reposted over 46 million times since Monday, following a deadly Israeli offensive on Rafah.

All Eyes On Rafah

On Sunday, two days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to stop its offensive in Rafah, Israeli bombings killed at least 45 people in al-Mawasi, a designated safe zone in western Rafah. Another attack on Tuesday in a displacement camp west of Rafah resulted in 21 deaths, including 12 women. Airstrikes continued on Wednesday morning.

Since October 7, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reports that Israel’s actions have led to the deaths of at least 36,171 people in Gaza.

What Is The Image?

The “All eyes on Rafah” image, generated by artificial intelligence, has become a powerful symbol drawing attention to the situation in Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border. The image’s release sparked global condemnation. In February, WHO representative for Gaza and the occupied West Bank, Richard “Rik” Peeperkorn, emphasized the world’s focus on the impending Rafah offensive. Palestinian-Iraqi-American artist and researcher Ameera Kawash, whose work examines AI’s impact on Palestinian narratives, suggested that the “All eyes on Rafah” slogan likely stemmed from Peeperkorn’s statement.

The image’s origins are unclear, but Mashable reported that the Instagram repost template was created by a small Malaysian account known for sharing pro-Palestinian graphics. The AI-generated image does not accurately depict Rafah or Gaza; instead, it shows an open desert with rows of refugee tents and snowy mountains in the background. The aerial view reveals tents arranged in orderly rows, with some lighter-colored tents spelling out “All eyes on Rafah,” all under a clear blue sky with fluffy clouds.

The “All eyes on Rafah” image has garnered more attention than many actual photos of Rafah or Gaza. One reason for its widespread popularity is its use of Instagram’s “Add Yours” feature, enabling users to easily repost it without searching for images. Additionally, because the image is AI-generated, it has likely avoided keyword-based censorship, contributing to its rapid and extensive sharing.

The Celeb Bandwagon

American supermodel Bella Hadid, whose father is Palestinian, has shown her support. Irish actress Nicola Coughlan from Netflix’s Bridgerton, American comedian and writer Hasan Minhaj, American actor Aaron Paul, British actor and activist Jameela Jamil, and British singer Dua Lipa have also expressed their solidarity.

Bollywood stars have also taken a stand for Palestine, sharing the slogan “All Eyes On Rafah” on their Instagram stories. Notable Indian actors participating include Varun Dhawan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Shilpa Rao, Nora Fatehi, Bhumi Pednekar, Huma Qureshi, Raftaar, Rakul Preet, and Konkona Sen Sharma. Additionally, Kim Sharma, Dhvani Bhanushali, Ayesha Takia, Gauahar Khan, Ileana D’Cruz, Malaika Arora, Madhuri Dixit, Hina Khan, Prince Narula, Palak Tiwari, Asim Riaz, Vishal Dadlani, Kajal Aggarwal, Jonita Gandhi, Munawar Faruqui, Ibrahim Ali Khan Pataudi, and Athiya Shetty have also shown their support.

But Is It Helping The Cause?

On the one hand, the striking aesthetic of the AI-generated image has captivated millions, drawing global attention to the plight of Rafah in a way that real images have struggled to achieve. Its visually appealing design, featuring a desert landscape with orderly tents and snowy mountains, contrasts sharply with the grim reality of the region. Yet, it has succeeded in going viral whereas more graphic and realistic images have not.

However, the glamorization of suffering raises concerns. The ease of sharing such images, particularly through Instagram’s “Add Yours” feature, may contribute to a sense of desensitization. When activism becomes a trend, the gravity of the situation can be overshadowed by the act of sharing itself. The image’s viral nature might dilute its message, turning a critical humanitarian crisis into another fleeting social media trend.

The fact that the image is AI-generated has helped it bypass social media censorship mechanisms that often flag content based on certain keywords. This has undeniably facilitated its rapid spread, highlighting both the potential of AI in evading censorship and the complexities it introduces in controlling the narrative.

While the viral spread of the image brings widespread attention, it also means the message can be easily misconstrued or stripped of its urgency. The “All Eyes On Rafah” call to action prompts a critical reflection: What comes next? Awareness is the first step but it must lead to tangible actions, such as advocating for ceasefires or humanitarian aid. People need to understand that this is a long-term movement. Reposting a single AI image without context is just the beginning, not the end of the effort.

In conclusion, the “All Eyes On Rafah” image is a powerful example of the double-edged nature of digital activism. While it has succeeded in drawing attention, it also highlights the need for focused, informed, and united efforts. As lives continue to be lost, the priority should be on sustained advocacy and concrete actions. Activism must transcend trends, driving real change and maintaining a united front against criticism that could deter future efforts. By choosing images, causes, and messages that resonate deeply, we can continue to amplify the voices of those in need and work towards meaningful solutions.

While it is critical to choose images, causes, and messages that resonate deeply, we can continue to amplify the voices of those in need and work towards meaningful solutions by acknowledging that Palestinian advocacy is a journey. We know more today than we did 8 months ago. We are more aware today than we did prior to October 7th, 2023. And this is because of a social media narrative that is undergoing a journey as well. We must call out wrong messaging but refrain from being the gate keepers who will prevent or dissuade others from sharing content that resonates with them. Let’s recognize that a dialogue has begun. The next step is to channel it in the right direction. That, too, shall come. Albeit, some say it is too late already.
