Aliya and Ibrahim’s story has audiences invested. In just a matter of a few episodes, these two have covered a journey that started felt doomed to begin with, but oh, how the tables have turned! We’re rooting for them and the story reaches full circle as all 3 protagonists – Shabbir, Aliya and Ibrahim face-off in a finale.

Mann Jogi: First Episode, First Review
Mann Jogi: The Final Countdown

Mann Jogi always had our heart. It was in the way Ibrahim shied away from Aliya’s gaze from the very first episode and the way Aliya, courageous, yet vulnerable decided to take baby steps to change the course of her story, and Ibrahim’s. It was in the way they both begun to trust each other, communicate in limited vocabulary and then song, shared stories and childhood scars, it was in the way Aliya held out her hand to Ibrahim after listening to his mother’s story, and the way he defended her before her brother, it was in the way she clung on to him and cried when she thought she had lost him, and then, exercized her right over him, by demanding he come home from work for the weekend.

A Simple Love Story

The narrative unfolded a simple love story, set against the backdrop of a raging Shabbir – what anger and force could not accomplish, a pure heart and the willingness to stay together, be there for the other person, no conditions attached, with the risk of losing their life looming above them, but the Faith in God, and each other, that brought them so far.

Mann Jogi has given us a mix of powerful characters, from the deeply toxic to the deeply touching. Anita and her parents rate number one, followed by Bilquis and her husband – a shade of grey and then the girls living in the hostel who have been rightly enamoured by their love story, just like viewers from across the screen.

Latest Episode Wrap

The latest episode has brought the couple to a crossroads. With no proof of nikah, and a video (made by Anita) that might or might not stand in a court of law, Aliya and Ibrahim are now at the police station. Ibrahim in custody as Shabbir seethes with urge to exact revenge. Ibrahim, obstinate and brave in his stance to own up to his nikah and protect Aliya. Aliya too, has come to the jail now, to proclaim her marriage to Ibrahim.

The characterizations in the narrative have stayed beautifully true to the original. Where Ibrahim is courageous enough to stand up for Aliya before Shabbir and declare his nikah, he is also naive enough to be caught unawares, expecting maulvi sahab had come to see him. His terror-stricken expressions when he heard the sounds of a thrashing given to a fellow prisoner revealed the scared young man who’s still getting to know the outside world, a brave heart, but a soul who still needs comfort and love – a gift he received from Aliya.

Where Ibrahim has joined a line of soft-feel heroes who do not shy away from showing they are scared at times, (take notes guys), Aliya’s inner strength, yet a pure kind of love for Ibrahim also delivered a character that shines as both relatable and inspiring – wholly human yet proudly courageous, something to aspire to for many young girls.

Often the final episode in a drama comes along as a sudden drop out of the blue, and viewers wonder how it will all be tied up in 30 odd minutes, with a magical sweep of the writer’s pen and director’s magic wand? But Mann Jogi decided to show us how it’s done.

Mirroring Hope Amidst Despair

The limited episode series has paced the story very well so far, which is a feat in itself – not too fast and not too slow. The final episode is balanced right where it should be – with the maulvi sahab as the final witness to the marriage. Will he utter the truth, or disappoint us?

While the story was truly about how love finds its way in the most unexpected places, and souls, it also shed light on how good people can be found anywhere, in any religion, ethnicity or background, how anger issues in a husband can lead to serious dilemmas and marital issues, and also how mothers of sons, in this case, Shabbir’s mother has helped fan the flames of turning him into the monster he is.

Mann Jogi has also given a gem to the Pakistani drama world where it created its own world, free from sensational dialogue or imagery, a lilting soundtrack that kept the story immensely poignant, and performances and casting that showed why storytelling is yet a rarely mastered art (and science), for those who believe…A shout out to the entire team for above par scripting, direction and performances!

Mann Jogi chose not to follow the crowd and that was probably its biggest win so far. With all eyes on the final episode, tell us what you’re loving about the story so far.
