Adnan Siddiqui Emphasizes the Importance of Hospitality in Diplomacy

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s visit to India was a significant diplomatic development, as it marked the first visit by a Pakistani foreign minister in 12 years. The occasion was made all the more special by the fact that a cultural event was held ahead of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, which saw members of the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) sitting together and enjoying a meal.
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s recent visit to Goa has been seen as a diplomatic success for Pakistan, as he achieved the country’s desired objectives. However, his press address after the SCO-CFM meeting has been criticized by some Indian media outlets, who have accused him of making threats. In response to a question about India hosting the G-20 meeting in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Bilawal expressed his condemnation and stated that Pakistan would respond in a manner that would be remembered. He also suggested that India may find it challenging to achieve full attendance, as other nations would not compromise their morals. ( Source: Tribune)
Despite the media scrutiny, it is important to acknowledge the importance of diplomacy and maintaining cordial relationships between nations. Actor Adnan Siddiqui took to social media to emphasize the significance of being a good host and treating guests with respect and hospitality, which can help prevent misunderstandings and build stronger relationships between countries.
“A good host upholds the value of hospitality and treats guests with dignity and respect, regardless of any underlying political or ideological conflicts. Ultimately, the act of demeaning a guest serves no productive purpose and only vitiates the situation.”
Bilawal addressed extensive foreign policy issues from a plebiscite in Kashmir, to Gujrat Riots, UN Resolutions, the necessity for peace talks as well as the Samjhota Express (among other burning diplomatic issues). His remarks and debate on the challenging & difficult pressure points was met with a positive response from public policy specialists.
Michael Kugelman, the director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center tweeted “There was much criticism of the Pakistan FM’s visit to India for SCO, but he appears to have accomplished what Islamabad sought: Participation in the SCO deliberations, and separate sideline meetings with all SCO members except India. Multilateral engagement w/bilats on the side.”
Why is it that, despite the positive outcome of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s visit to India, the media chooses to focus on the negative aspects and sensationalize his statements? Why do we often forget the importance of diplomacy and maintaining cordial relationships between nations, instead of perpetuating animosity and distrust? And why do we not recognize the significance of being a good host and treating guests with respect and hospitality, even when underlying political or ideological conflicts exist?
By emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and hospitality, we can promote a culture of diplomacy and goodwill that benefits all nations. Rather than focusing on divisive rhetoric and sensationalism, we must strive to promote positive narratives and encourage dialogue and understanding between nations. After all, isn’t that what true diplomacy is all about?
