On Thursday, June 12, 2025, a catastrophic plane crash occurred in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, claiming lives and leaving hundreds in mourning.

All We Know About The Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Air India Flight AI171 Disaster

Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff, plummeting into a densely populated area known as Meghani Nagar. The tragedy unfolded just minutes after the aircraft took off at 1:38 p.m. local time from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. According to India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the plane had reached an altitude of just 625 feet before it disappeared from radar and struck the ground. The DGCA confirmed that the aircraft issued a Mayday call moments before losing contact, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

The impact site has been identified as the undergraduate hostel mess of B.J. Medical College, a major medical institution in Ahmedabad. Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of students and interns from the nearby Civil Hospital were gathered in the mess at the time of the crash, many of whom were having lunch. The aircraft, loaded with fuel due to its long-haul international route, exploded upon impact, setting surrounding buildings on fire and creating a scene of chaos and devastation. Graphic visuals aired by local television networks showed bodies strewn across the area, thick smoke billowing into the sky, and students leaping from windows to escape the flames. The hostel and adjacent residential structures were engulfed in fire, complicating rescue efforts. Emergency responders, firefighters, and medical teams arrived at the scene within minutes, working to douse the flames and pull survivors from the wreckage.

The Death Toll

As of the latest updates, at least 133 people have been confirmed dead, with the toll expected to rise as search operations continue. Among the deceased are passengers aboard the flight as well as students and staff caught in the hostel mess. Over 40 individuals have been hospitalized with serious injuries, and local authorities are working to identify the victims. According to Air India, the flight was carrying 242 individuals, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, one Canadian citizen, and 12 crew members. Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, Director General of Civil Aviation, told the Associated Press that the discrepancy in numbers was due to rapidly changing information as rescue operations were still underway.

Latest news updates report that there are no survivors so far from the Air India Flight 171 Ahmedabad plane crash.

The Response

In response to the disaster, Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu posted on X (formerly Twitter) that all possible efforts were being made to ensure medical aid and relief support at the site. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also visited the crash site and hospitals treating the injured, promising full assistance from the state government. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose home state is Gujarat, called the incident “deeply saddening” and assured the public that the government was closely monitoring the situation.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer released a statement expressing grief and solidarity, stating that “the scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating.” The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office confirmed it was in contact with Indian authorities and working to assist affected British citizens and their families. Boeing, the American aircraft manufacturer behind the 787 Dreamliner, also issued a statement saying it was “deeply saddened by the incident” and would provide full cooperation with Indian aviation authorities during the investigation.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India has begun a full probe into the crash, focusing on possible technical malfunctions, pilot error, weather conditions, and other contributing factors. Preliminary reports indicate that weather at the time of takeoff was clear, eliminating poor visibility or storms as immediate causes. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, known for its advanced technology and fuel efficiency, had no previous record of a fatal crash prior to this incident, according to the Aviation Safety Network. Investigators have recovered the aircraft’s black box and cockpit voice recorder, which are expected to offer critical insight into what went wrong during the flight’s final moments.

Beyond the global concern over aviation safety, the human tragedy at the heart of this incident is the loss of young lives in the B.J. Medical College hostel. Students who were preparing for their careers in medicine were caught in a disaster that no one could have foreseen. The news of medical students perishing in their hostel mess has stirred public emotions across India, with vigils held at various campuses and institutions. Local residents and hospital staff described the aftermath as haunting, with several survivors requiring psychological counseling alongside physical treatment.

This is the worst aviation disaster in India since the Mangalore crash in 2010 and has reignited debates about flight paths over densely populated urban zones.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for verified updates as more details emerge from officials and investigations.
