An Exclusive With Nina Kashif On World Cup Docuseries “Cornered Tigers – The 1992 Story”

By far and large, the 1992 world cup win was the most glorious moment in our nation’s history. A moment we would then latch on to and remember with fervor and pride while we hopefully wait for another somewhere in the near future. While we are particularly cognizant of the above as the most glorious part of our rich history, why has it been only really stored in our memories, collections on the world wide web and perhaps the TV? Why has it not been documented in a dedicated series essaying all the real life legends who carried the magnanimous victory home?

Our questions might have been just answered, as luck would have it, the 1992 world cup is being covered by Producer Nina Kashif and director Adnan Sarwar, bringing a first-of-its-kind docuseries to highlight a never-before-seen perspective on the historic 1992 Cricket World Cup. The docuseries “Cornered Tigers – The 1992 Story” focuses on the events of 92 that forever changed Pakistan’s cricket landscape with some eye opening confessions, inspirational stories and behind the scenes that haven’t ever made it to the screen before. The wait is over. Cornered Tigers offers cricket lovers a detailed, insightful side of the player’s personal experiences, emotions and memories during the World cup journey through exclusive interviews with the players themselves. Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Javed Miandad, and an array of legendary cricketers will be featured in the “Cornered Tigers” docuseries.

The story teller, game changer and producer, known for her hit productions Humsafar, Baaghi, Aik Hai Nigar and Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay to name a few. Nina Kashif is the force behind some of Pakistan’s most acclaimed productions. Cricket fans, the wait is over! The Docuseries’ Producer Nina Kashif has exclusively answered some of the burning questions we had, on behalf of the nation’s cricket lovers.

1. Why did it take so long for some one to venture out to cover the 1992 World Cup – the most glorious moment in our history?

The fact surprises the ace producer herself, she says: “I am actually surprised myself, how come no one has ventured to do this before however few commercial brands have attempted to do something of the sort in a short form but a docuseries on the subject hasn’t been attempted before!” In her professional opinion, one of the reasons could be the tough task of getting all the cricketers onboard. “It has been a task and a half for us as well but we planned it in a way that we will pick up 6 to 7 players for this.”

“A lot of people asked me.. why now? Especially at a time where our political and economic scenario isn’t commendable…my answer would be: If not now then when? Our Gen Z and Alpha.. and all those who were born post 1992, unable to witness THE biggest historical moment, how will they ever know if they don’t see it now? We might be already late in essaying this story but as they say better late than never. So we at Tapmad took the initiative to tell this wonderful story especially to our younger cricket enthusiasts!”

“As you said it was one of the most glorious moments in our history and hence it was a challenge to do justice to the moment, this endeavor of ours is a humble attempt, which we hope would be appreciated by the audience. “

2. Do you think we need to cover our Olympic Gold medalists too since Hockey is a sport we have unfortunately lost now for which we once were reigning champions?

Seems like this might just be on the list of future possible projects? “Absolutely! It’s high time we start telling the world and our younger generations about our momentous accomplishments. And maybe after seeing that, our current hockey team might get some boost from it and up their game.”
“Infact, thanks for the idea .. it’s in my list of future projects now” – You are most welcome Nina!

3. One interesting incident or eye opener you didn’t know about till you did this series?

Looks like the series has dispelled some big myths that have been around for a long time! “People think it was Imran Khan who discovered Wasim Akram but it was actually the legend Javed Miandad who discovered his potential.”

4. The most challenging thing to accomplish during the series and how you achieved it?

In a task so mighty, she sure did meet challenges but managed to ace them! “Everything felt like a challenge, going back to history itself is a tedious and challenging task but at the same time knowing so many things that we were not aware of itself was extremely fascinating…one of the biggest challenge was to get hold of the cricketers due to their work engagements, most of them were travelling frequently. To include Wasim Akram we actually went to Dubai for his interview because otherwise it was very difficult to get his part and we had a specific date to close the camera.”

5. Are you a cricket enthusiast? Or along the journey of your 2nd web series you learnt more about cricket and maybe have developed an enthusiasm for it?

“Our docuseries Cornered Tigers is the emblem of the sub continent’s obsession with cricket!” Nina Kashif quoted a Pakistani cricketer “It’s in our blood.” She believes Cricket is the one factor that actually brings our entire nation together. On her personal love for cricket: “Having three Cricket enthusiasts brothers and now a Cricket fanatic son, enthusiasm was always there in my life but yes, you are right along the journey of my docu-webseries I learnt so much more about the game itself.”

“I had to watch a lot of matches and cricketers’ interviews for hours on end before we went on the shoot of Barwaan Khiladi and even the Cornered Tigers shoot, we got to know so much about what actually goes behind the field, so yes along with my own enthusiasm, these two Cricket based projects have taught me a lot about the game.”

6. Can you share your memory from the day of the 1992 World Cup win?

Every adult today has a certain nostalgia attached to the 1992 World Cup win and Nina Kashif’s personal memory is a very heart warming one. She said her memory of the 92′ World Cup is a very personal and emotional one which she is sharing with FUCHSIA readers for the first time!

“I remember my mother had to drop my father to the airport as he was going on a course to another city and I stayed back at home. While on their way back, my mother and younger brother had just received the news that Pakistan had indeed won the World Cup! I remember the house door suddenly opening with my mom coming in with a huge box of Mithai and declaring we have won. I wasn’t expecting her to actually celebrate it like this since she wasn’t much into Cricket.”

“My mother, younger brothers and I were all ecstatic! I lost both my parents after 2 years in 94, so when thinking back, if I need to pick up a handful of moments where I saw my mother truly happy…Pakistan’s win of the 92 world cup was surely one of them. It will always remain extremely very special to me”

Well that ended on a sentimental note but isn’t that the entire essence of the 92 world cup’s memory? Cricket fans can revisit the memories of the day today exclusively on Tapmad’s premiere of “Cornered Tigers: The 1992 Story.
