Harry Potter, everyone’s favorite magical movie saga that defined a generation is returning, but this time, the story will unfold as a television series. Thirteen years after Deathly Hallows: Part 2 brought Harry’s epic journey to a dramatic close, the wizarding world is being reborn on screen in an all-new, episodic format.
HBO’s reimagining of the iconic book-to-film franchise will be led by Succession’s Francesca Gardiner as showrunner and Mark Mylod as director. The series will revisit the story of Harry Potter, a young boy who discovers he’s a wizard and leaves his non-magical family to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he becomes best friends with Ron and Hermione and finds himself entangled in the fight against the dark wizard Lord Voldemort—better known as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.”
The show arrives nearly three decades after J.K. Rowling first introduced readers to the magical world with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which was adapted into a blockbuster film in 2001, directed by Chris Columbus. Over the years, the original film franchise has become a global phenomenon, earning $7.7 billion at the worldwide box office. The series will span seven seasons, with each season dedicated to one of the original novels. The show will be released as an HBO Original, rather than under the Max banner as initially planned.
Here’s What We Know So Far
Casting is currently underway, with over 30,000 children auditioning from the UK and Ireland for the iconic roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Some major adult roles have already been cast: John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu will take on Severus Snape, Janet McTeer will play Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid. Other confirmed cast members include Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
The series is expected to begin filming in summer 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, UK—the original filming location for the movies. While an official release date hasn’t been set yet, the show is tentatively planned to premiere in either late 2026 or early 2027. Despite past controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling, she remains actively involved in the creative process of the show as an executive producer.
HBO also released a statement in April 2023 about the adaptation and its place in the Harry Potter universe: “The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling and will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years.
Exploring every corner of the wizarding world, each season will bring Harry Potter and its incredible adventures to new and existing audiences and will stream exclusively on Max where it’s available globally, including upcoming markets such as Turkey, the U.K., Germany and Italy, among others. The original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch around the world.
What More Can We Expect?
Variety has reported Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy might also join the cast as Voldemort but that is not confirmed at the moment but we’re sure that he will do justice to role.
With the first released in 1997, Harry Potter books have sold over 600 million copies worldwide. The much-anticipated HBO series is expected to bring a new generation to the stories of the wondrous boy wizard and his escapades. .
According to Warner, the original eight films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch around the world. Daniel Radcliffe starred as Harry Potter in all the films, and as Lithgow foreshadowed, will be forever linked to the role. As the magic of Harry Potter prepares to return in a bold, better than ever form, excitement is building among fans especially for those who grew up watching the movies.
