From local councils to national parliaments, Pakistani-origin politicians are leaving their mark on politics across the globe.

From the halls of Westminster to the parliaments of Canberra, Ottawa, and beyond, politicians of Pakistani origin are shaping debates, leading parties, and influencing policy on the world stage. Their journeys often weave together stories of migration, resilience, and the determination to make space in political systems where they once had no representation.

In an era when questions of identity, belonging, and equity dominate global discourse, these leaders stand as proof that politics is no longer confined by birthplace – and that the voices shaped in one homeland can resonate powerfully in another.

A post shared by Bisma Asif MP (@sandgatebisma)

Bisma Asif made history in 2024 when she became Queensland’s first Muslim MP, winning the seat of Sandgate. Born in Lahore, she moved to Australia at the age of eight, speaking no English at the time. Today, she’s fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and English, a skill she says helped her connect with a diverse voter base on the campaign trail. Her journey is one of grit and resilience: as a teenager she worked three jobs to help her family make rent, studied Economics at university, and never lost sight of her belief in a fairer future where hard work is rewarded. In politics, she’s been clear about her priorities – stronger local economies, quality schools and hospitals, and infrastructure that actually meets community needs.

Her path into public service was shaped by personal challenges. From experiencing wage theft to relying on Medicare for treatment of ovarian cysts, Bisma saw up close the value of systems that protect and support people. That led her to the union movement, Labor, and years of working behind the scenes as a policy adviser before running for office herself. For many young migrant families in her electorate, seeing someone who looked like them and spoke their language on the ballot was powerful. She calls her win “spectacular but ordinary” – a reflection of modern Australia, where stories like hers are part of the national fabric. And when she’s not in parliament, you’ll likely find her at the beach, rereading Sally Rooney novels, or in the kitchen making her famous goat karahi, butter chicken, or a slow-cooked Greek chicken that always wins over a crowd.

Sadiq Khan

A post shared by Sadiq Khan (@sadiq)

Sadiq Khan has been at the helm of London since 2016, making history as the city’s first Muslim mayor. Born in 1970 and raised on the Henry Prince Estate in Earlsfield, south-west London, Khan grew up as the son of Pakistani immigrants – his father a bus driver, his mother a seamstress. Those working-class roots shaped his politics, especially his belief in trade unions and fairness. After studying law at the University of North London, he built a career as a human rights solicitor, taking on legal aid cases and challenging authority when necessary. Politics soon followed: first as a Wandsworth councilor, then as the Labor MP for Tooting from 2005 to 2016, during which he became the first Muslim and first Asian to attend Cabinet as a Minister of State.

As mayor, Khan has faced both acclaim and controversy. He’s championed cleaner air, expanded London’s cycling network, and pushed the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) citywide, a move praised by environmentalists but met with suburban protests. His time in office has also weathered turbulent moments: Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic, the Grenfell Tower fire, and Black Lives Matter protests. Khan has been open about the Islamophobic abuse he’s endured, most publicly during his high-profile feud with Donald Trump. Yet in 2024, he secured a third term, making him the only person to win the office three times. For Khan, it’s always been about “hope over fear” – a sentiment that continues to define his politics and his vision for London’s future.

Sajid Javid’s political career has been defined by breaking barriers and holding some of the most powerful roles in the UK government. Born to Pakistani immigrant parents and raised in Bristol, Javid’s story is one of ambition and persistence. Before politics, he built a successful career in finance, becoming a Vice President at Chase Manhattan Bank at just 25, and later a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank, where he focused on emerging markets. In 2009, he stepped away from the corporate world to enter public service, winning the seat of Bromsgrove as a Conservative MP in 2010.

Since then, Javid’s political résumé has been nothing short of extensive: Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and leading key departments from Culture to Business. His tenure has seen him navigate economic pressures, immigration debates, and the public health crisis of Covid-19. Known for his no-nonsense style and economic expertise, Javid has carved out a place as one of Britain’s most prominent politicians of Pakistani origin — a figure who’s moved from the council estates of Bristol to the highest decision-making tables in Westminster.

A post shared by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi (@sayeedawarsi)

Sayeeda Warsi made history as Britain’s youngest peer and the first Muslim woman to hold a Cabinet position. From a working-class Yorkshire upbringing to the House of Lords, her journey was anything but ordinary. As Chair of the Conservative Party, she became known for her candid views and refusal to play it safe, often speaking from a place of conviction rather than political convenience.

What set Warsi apart was how she carried her voice into spaces where it wasn’t always welcomed. She openly called out Islamophobia, questioned foreign policy decisions, and pushed conversations others avoided. Agree with her or not, she never blended into the background, she led with identity, principle, and a boldness that made her stand out in British politics.

Born in Lahore and trained as an environmental engineer, Dr. Mehreen Faruqi’s journey from Pakistan to Australia’s Senate is one of grit, purpose, and unapologetic activism. As the Greens Deputy Leader and Senator for New South Wales, she has consistently pushed for bold climate action, equality, anti-racism policies, and a politics that puts people and the planet before corporate interests. With a career spanning engineering, academia, and local government, Mehreen brings a rare mix of technical expertise and grassroots sensibility to national politics.

Known for speaking her mind and refusing to soften her stance for political comfort, she’s challenged systemic racism, fought for affordable education, and stood firmly on issues of global justice. Whether it’s climate adaptation, international aid, or the push for an Australian republic, Mehreen approaches every debate with the same core belief – that compassion and fairness must be at the heart of governance, and that leadership means having the courage to demand better.

The rise of Pakistani-origin politicians across continents is more than a story of individual success — it’s a reflection of changing societies, evolving democracies, and the universal pursuit of a better future. Whether championing climate action, social justice, education, or equality, these leaders prove that representation is not just symbolic – it shapes policies, challenges prejudice, and inspires the next generation. Their journeys remind us that identity can be both deeply rooted and globally relevant – and that no matter where you start, the impact you create can reach far beyond borders.

Salman Bhojani’s story is one of grit, hustle, and breaking barriers. Moving to Texas from Pakistan at 19, he worked three minimum-wage jobs to help his family while studying. From running convenience stores to earning a law degree from Southern Methodist University and a Comparative Law Diploma from Oxford, he steadily climbed his way up. His first big political milestone came in 2018 when he became the first person of color elected to the Euless City Council, later serving as Mayor Pro Tem.

In 2022, he made history as the first Muslim and South Asian elected to the Texas Legislature, winning his seat with 58% of the vote. Salman has focused on key issues like healthcare, education, business development, and immigrant rights, all while keeping his core belief intact, that when opportunities are open to everyone, the community as a whole becomes stronger. His journey reflects not just personal success but also a commitment to opening doors for others.
