Most conversations about healthy eating focus on what we should put on our plates. But according to new research, when you eat could also play an important role -especially when it comes to keeping your brain healthy as you grow older.

A preliminary study presented at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual meeting has suggested that limiting meals to an eight- or nine-hour eating window may offer modest benefits for memory and problem-solving in older adults.
While the findings are promising, researchers say they are still early and should be interpreted with caution until larger, peer-reviewed studies confirm the results.
What did the study find?
Researchers followed 47 women between the ages of 50 and 79 who were living with overweight or obesity during a six-month weight loss programme.
All participants reduced their daily calorie intake by about 500 calories. However, they were divided into two groups.
One group continued eating across a more typical 12-hour period each day, while the second group was asked to finish all of their meals within an eating window of roughly eight to nine hours – generally between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. They were also encouraged to avoid eating during the four hours before bedtime.
Interestingly, both groups lost almost the same amount of weight by the end of the study.
The difference appeared when researchers assessed cognitive performance. Participants who followed the shorter eating window performed better on tests measuring planning, organisation and problem-solving. They also tended to make fewer mistakes on memory and learning tasks, although researchers noted those particular improvements were less conclusive. Because both groups lost similar amounts of weight, the researchers believe meal timing itself may have contributed to the cognitive differences.
Why could meal timing matter?
Scientists don’t yet know exactly why restricting eating hours might benefit the brain.
One possible explanation is that eating earlier in the day works better with the body’s natural circadian rhythm—our internal clock that regulates sleep, hormones and metabolism.
Researchers also believe avoiding heavy meals late at night may improve blood sugar regulation, reduce inflammation and support metabolic health, all of which are closely linked to long-term brain function. However, they stress that these are still theories that require much more research.

To better understand what these findings actually mean in everyday life, we spoke to our onboard dietician, Fareeha Jay. She points out that while the results are certainly interesting, it’s important to remember that the research is still in its early stages. “The study hasn’t yet gone through full peer review, so we can’t treat it as final evidence,” she explains. “The improvements were modest, not dramatic. But they do suggest there may be some benefit when it comes to memory, problem-solving and overall cognition.”
According to Fareeha, one of the biggest reasons could simply be avoiding large meals late at night.
“Many people barely eat during the day and then have one very heavy dinner. When that happens, blood sugar levels become harder to regulate and inflammation may increase. If we stop eating earlier in the evening, it may improve blood sugar control, vascular function and inflammation, which could ultimately support brain health.”
She adds that while scientists are still exploring the exact connection, this explanation makes biological sense and aligns with what researchers are currently investigating.
Should you start restricting your eating window?
Fareeha believes the study shouldn’t be viewed as a strict rule, but rather as another reminder that giving your body enough time to rest between meals has benefits beyond weight management. “Even if someone can’t stick to an eight-hour eating window, I always encourage at least a 12-hour overnight gap whenever possible. If you finish dinner around 8 p.m., having breakfast around 8 a.m. the next morning is a sensible place to start.”
She also recommends leaving around three to four hours between your last meal and bedtime whenever you can. “Whether it’s for cognition or simply better overall health, giving your digestive system time to rest is beneficial. Our bodies need that recovery period.”
The bottom line
This study doesn’t prove that eating within an eight-hour window will prevent dementia or dramatically improve memory.
What it does suggest is that meal timing may be another piece of the puzzle when it comes to healthy ageing.
For now, experts agree that maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, getting enough sleep and managing your weight remain some of the strongest lifestyle habits for protecting long-term brain health. As more research emerges, paying attention not only to what we eat, but also when we eat, may become another simple habit worth considering.
