Directors Guild of Pakistan has announced new initiatives to promote development and excellence in Pakistani TV & Cinema

The oath-taking ceremony of the governing body of Directors Guild of Pakistan was held in Karachi. In the ceremony, Misbah Khalid was sworn in as President, Shahzad Nawaz as Vice President, Rafay Rashdi as General Secretary, Ismail Jilani as Joint Secretary, Saifee Hassan as Treasurer.
Other members of the governing body, including, Jamshed Mehmood, Asad Mumtaz, Mohsin Mirza and Wajahat Rauf, also took their oaths and expressed their vision for the future of Pakistan’s creative community and its role in nation-building.
Filmmaker Development Programme
In a statement, the Directors Guild of Pakistan highlighted that the centerpiece of their new initiatives is the Filmmaker Development Programme. This program aims to offer aspiring directors unparalleled opportunities by providing them with access to mentoring, workshops, and vital resources. The Directors Guild of Pakistan envisions this program as a means to foster the growth and development of talented directors in the country.
The statement emphasized that in addition to supporting individual filmmakers, the Directors Guild of Pakistan (DGP) is committed to collectively advocating for the rights and interests of Pakistani filmmakers. The DGP aims to address the challenges faced by filmmakers, promote fair compensation practices, and encourage the creative expression of filmmakers. The Guild also expressed its intention to actively participate in discussions aimed at protecting artistic freedom within the industry.

The oath taking ceremony was attended by members of the guild and media fraternity; Nadeem Baig, Ehteshamuddin, Aabis Raza, Saifee Hasan, Angeline Malik, Asad Mumtaz, Atiqa Odho, Syed Ahmed Kamran, Usman Peerzada, and others.
It remains to be seen if the newly formed Directors Guild will ensure better filmmaking in Pakistan, but it’s certainly a start. Let’s hope the project kicks off as platform for young and old filmmakers, visionaries, to give us a talent pool that we know we own, all we need to do now is provide them opportunities, ensure better work practices, minimum pay and opportunities – a tall order for all those who took oath on this momentous first – let’s make it the first of many to breathe change into a dynamic industry!
