Twitter is divided over the two tragedies that have struck at sea recently: the Greece boat disaster & the lost submersible on an expedition to Titanic’s wreckage, now out of oxygen. Find out more!

There is a high chance you are aware of the two tragedies at sea that have struck this past week. The hundreds of migrants who met their death in the Greek waters and 5 high profile individuals who disappeared deep in the ocean on an expedition to Titanic’s wreckage with just 96 hours of life support.
People have been drawing a comparison between the Titan, the missing submersible now out of oxygen and the overloaded Greek boat disaster capsizing with 300 plus Pakistanis onboard with many who met their death underwater. And this is what they had to opine:
It is quite sad, run the conversations, when we examine the facts of the two tragedies, the attention each was given and how those accountable are being held. One was trending globally from the get go and the other seemed to be lost in the former’s hype. One has received global aid in terms of Canadian, French and American vessels and the other was denied any help despite being on the global humanity radar. The billionaires have gotten more world resources directed towards them than the migrant crisis. But then again, it’s also sad that we are comparing one tragedy to another, because both had human lives at stake.
While both are in no way to be weighed over another, it hasn’t spared humanity from questioning the media coverage, devoted resources and the contrast in media coverage. Some opinions term the 5 going out to deep sea in a submersible just to get a look at the Titanic from a camera, an act of utter carelessness? The fact that they could afford $ 250,000 suggests they do not deserved to be saved? Do they deserve the same wretched fate as the Greek migrants?
There’s outrage about the scanty media coverage about the migrant boat in Greek waters & subsequent deaths while the submersible has been trending days on end as the billionaires are in focus.
Twitterverse is divided about the comparison:
Those Highlighting The Atrocity Bigger Than Titan’s
A Contrast Of The Rich & Poor
Do Migrant Lives Not Matter?
“Absolutely horrible what happened to the people on the #submarine however, I can’t help but notice that the #GreeceBoatDisaster in which so far 82 have died and more than 500 are missing is not even receiving half as much media attention. Asylum seekers’ lives don’t matter?”
A Harsh Reality Of A Harsh World
“As George Orwell wrote – “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Bitter Truth! Harsh Realities of the World!”
Hypocrisy In Today’s Age
“Take a good hard look in the mirror, what do you see, You can clearly see the hypocrisy in todays day & age. #Titan #OceanGate #OceanGateExpeditions #OceanGateSub #OceanGateSub #Titanic #TitanicRescue #titanicsubmarine #TitanicSubSearch #titanicsubmersible“
Media’s & Country’s Deafening Silence
“7 days, two boats. 5 people, 500 people. $250,000 per trip, unknown. Millionaires, migrants. 1 teenager, up to 100 children. Great media coverage, silence.

Feeling Grief For Both
It’s Possible To Feel Pain for Both
“It is possible to feel grief and pain for BOTH the hundreds killed in the Greece boat disaster and the 5 people inside the Titanic sub. It’s possible to imagine their pain & panic at a human level. Though there’s A LOT of politics to discuss here, the moment for that is not now.”
Rich Or Poor, Don’t Be Callous
“I hope this was last trip of mankind to see the wreckage of ill-fated Titanic. Rich or poor, don’t be stupid. Don’t take risks of this magnitude. Think about your mom/siblings/parents back home before you embark adventures like this. #Titan #OceanGate #Titanic“
Traumatizing For Both
“I can Imagine what this people are going through right now, it’s so traumatizing down there! We don’t care that they are rich, they are still humans. Lesson learnt #Titan#Titanic is a graveyard not playground for billionaires! #RIP#OceanGate“
Why Weigh Human Suffering Against Each Other
“Why do we try to weigh human suffering against each other? Saying the submarine tragedy shouldn’t matter while migrants suffer is not just cruel, it’s missing the point. Change happens when we unite in our empathy, not when we divide it. #Titanic #Submersible #GreeceBoatDisaster“
Both the tragedies deserved to be avoided, concerned authorities brought to task and highlighted. As per keyboard warriors on twitter, the 5 on an expedition to Titanic’s wreckage made a foolish decision but there’s also the opinion about how we wouldn’t discover the world we live in or make it to space or the depths of the ocean if some of us don’t take those risks and flag bearers for risking adventure and discovery, exploring the world we live in as a result. They take risks we wouldn’t dare to. Also it goes without saying how the media can be more just, not selective in depicting true tragedies. The migrant crisis is real and devastating and the Greece travesty deserves way more global coverage than it has been given. To end it, both causes need to be highlighted equally and the world will hopefully take notice.
As consumers of news content, we need to be more sensitive towards loss of human lives. Just like the media needs to be more responsible, so do we. If we champion the right causes, the media will follow through and vice versa. But pitting one human disaster against another is just not human.
