From Internet Slang To The Dictionary: Mogging Has Officially Made It

At this point, keeping up with Gen Z slang deserves to be a skill on its own CV. Just when you think you’ve finally figured out what everyone means by ‘rizz’, ‘delulu’ and ‘aura points’, another word comes along and makes you question whether you’ve been living under a rock. And this time, it’s ‘mogging’.

Now, I’m Gen Z myself, so you’d think I’d be the last person needing a translation. I have used this terms many times in the recent weeks but I thought to myself – “Think again.” When I first came across the word, I had to resort to asking my cousin what it actually meant. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who needed a little help because ‘mogging’ has now officially made its way into the Collins English Dictionary as its 2026 Word of the Year.

Yes, a word that many of us might have struggled to use in a sentence has managed to beat a whole list of contenders. And if you’re still wondering what it means, well, let’s just say you’ve probably been mogged at some point without even knowing it.

The word is used when someone outshines or outdoes another person, usually in appearance, confidence or overall presence. You turn up feeling like the main character, only for someone else to walk in and steal the entire show. That’s a mogging. Your friend posts a holiday picture that makes your last vacation look like a trip to the neighbourhood park? Mogged. Someone turns up with an immaculate outfit while you’re still trying to convince yourself that yours works? Also mogged.

And apparently, there’s no limit to what can be mogged. Hair, height, jawlines, outfits, cars, coffee orders and even entire video games. If something makes yours look inferior by comparison, it has probably mogged you.

The funny thing is that this word didn’t exactly begin as harmless internet banter. ‘Mogging’ is believed to have originated from AMOG, short for ‘Alpha Male Of The Group’, and was associated with bodybuilding forums and online communities around the mid-2010s. It later became popular in manosphere and looksmaxxing spaces, where people would compare physical appearances and use the term to describe someone who supposedly looked more masculine or attractive.

But like plenty of internet trends, it eventually escaped its original corners and found a much bigger audience. Now, it is being thrown around in everyday conversations, social media comments and celebrity discussions, often with absolutely no intention of taking it seriously.

Collins says the word’s usage has increased by 210 per cent over the past year. It beat other shortlisted words including ‘ghost job’, which describes a job advertised without any actual intention of hiring, ‘bixie’, a haircut between a bob and a pixie, ‘carspreading’ and ‘fricy’, meaning food that is both fruity and spicy.

Even Arnold Schwarzenegger got in on the joke, sharing an old clip of himself flexing his muscles on X while referring to the new trend of ‘frame mogging’. If there’s anyone who can confidently participate in a conversation about outdoing people physically, it is probably a former professional bodybuilder.

Collins managing director Alex Beecroft said the choice reflects how Gen Z and Gen Alpha are adopting words and making them their own. And while the dictionary might have officially crowned mogging, younger generations have clearly been busy giving the English language a makeover of their own.

Last year’s Collins Word of the Year was ‘vibe coding’, so apparently, we have gone from making things with vibes to making people feel inferior by comparison. What next?

For now, if someone tells you that you’ve been mogged, don’t immediately take offence. It might just be a joke. And if you have no idea what they’re talking about, don’t worry. Even Gen Z needs to ask a cousin sometimes.
