“No one is safe in Gaza. No one is spared. Schools and other civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times, they are not a target,” UNWRA tweet on X

In the latest devastating incident in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, Israel’s military bombed the UN-operated Al-Jaouni school in central Gaza for the fifth time since October. The assault has resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people, including six UNRWA staff members, and the injuries of many more. The attack has sparked international condemnation and highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
A Deadly Strike On A Shelter
An Israeli airstrike targeted the al-Jaouni school located in the Nuseirat refugee camp. This school, operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), served as a shelter for thousands of displaced Palestinians seeking refuge from the ongoing conflict. Witnesses described a horrific scene, with women and children “blown to pieces” in the blast. The UNRWA chief condemned the “endless and senseless killing” as the number of its staff members killed since the conflict began rose to at least 220. Among the victims of this latest strike were the manager of the shelter and five other UNRWA employees, marking the highest death toll among its staff in a single incident since the war’s onset in October.
Civilian Casualties And International Response
The Gaza Civil Defence spokesperson, Mahmud Bassal, confirmed the strike killed 18 people and critically wounded a similar number. This incident has added to the mounting civilian casualties in Gaza, where Israel’s military campaign has killed over 41,084 people and wounded 95,029. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, stating it amounted to “dramatic violations of international humanitarian law.” He emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and UN facilities in conflict zones.
Israel’s Justification And International Criticism
Israel’s military claimed it targeted “terrorists” planning attacks from the school and asserted it took measures to avoid harming civilians. Despite this, widespread skepticism and condemnation followed. The Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, criticized Guterres’ condemnation and defended Israel’s right to act against Hamas, which Israel and several other countries, including the UK, have designated as a terrorist organization. This attack marks the fifth time al-Jaouni school has been struck during the conflict. In a previous attack in July, 16 people were killed in what the Israeli military described as a targeted strike on structures used by Hamas fighters. Hamas has consistently denied using schools and other civilian sites for military purposes.
The Broader Impact On Gaza
The broader and brutal conflict, including the attack on the al-Jaouni school, has caused massive casualties and destruction in Gaza. Since October 7, when Hamas-led attacks killed at least 1,139 people in Israel and resulted in over 200 captives being taken to Gaza, the region has been engulfed in violence. Israeli forces have launched a campaign to dismantle Hamas, leading to a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reiterated the UN’s condemnation of all airstrikes targeting civilians and UN facilities. Various international bodies have echoed the call for a ceasefire, urging an end to the violence that has caused immense suffering for civilians on both sides.
The tragedy at al-Jaouni school underscores the dire need for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. As the death toll rises and the humanitarian crisis deepens, the international community must intensify efforts to broker a ceasefire and protect innocent lives caught in the crossfire. The loss of UNRWA staff members and the relentless targeting of shelters highlight the devastating impact of this conflict on those who have dedicated their lives to aiding the most vulnerable.
