The ending twist of Gentleman was probably the only (still a bit weak) saving grace for the drama. Despite the return of Humayun Saeed on TV after so many years, the refreshing and much awaited combination of Humayun Saeed, Yumna Zaidi, Zahid Ahmed, Sohai Ali, Ahmed Ali Butt and director Haissam Hussain could not save a weak script, and its compromised execution made Gentleman a lost opportunity.
A Promising Start
The drama started on a refreshing note and had some very interesting points in its favour, but soon after, seemed to lose its grip on narrative and execution. To see production and directorial mishaps from a seasoned team, is disappointing and to accept them, is doing injustice to the industry.
Incredible Twists
Moving on to the last episode, Mifrah’s naive belief in her uncle seemed too far-fetched, Zarnab’s idealistic approach that she will be able to fight the system and get Munna released after his surrender made watching the final episode very hard. Did Rehmati deserve to be killed in that manner, was it really Munna’s style to attack someone from the back? The kind of camaraderie they both shared once, they deserved to at least be facing each other when pulling the trigger. Munna’s character suddenly diminished considerably when he shot Rehmati in the back.
The Preachy in The Messages
And why oh why did we have to listen to so many preachy messages, and that also when Munna is about to be shot, and we are hoping against hope, that maybe the drama will show Munna’s people coming to save him somehow in filmy style and offer us a thrilling watch. But alas, no, that was not to happen. Watching the final episode felt like watching a copy of an old Bollywood movie in 2024 that feels outdated and lacks a punch line in today’s fast-paced, dynamic world.
The car scene between Mifrah and Zarnab, with focus shifting from one to another and then switching them into a zombie-like mode will always remain a mystery. Why did the team choose to go with moments that completely took away from the action and dampened the gravity of the situation. Instead of being worried and feeling emotional about Munna or Zarnab, one would constantly be looking at how Mifrah or Zarnab would move out of focus – like blurry, white ghosts and then, back again.
Change Makers
Maybe a deliberate attempt by the industry to focus on the following can save a project:
1: Script doctors.
2: Focus group
3: A simple realisation that audiences have evolved, this is 2024 and script plus direction needs to incorporate the changing audiences.
On Another Note
The performances were great and certainly a treat to watch. The drama also gave us some beautiful and endearing relationships between the characters, like the bond between Dilbar and Munna, and Dilbar and Zarnab. The drama also offered many thought-provoking themes. Even though they were compromised because of the preachy execution towards the latter half of the drama, but we acknowledge the effort. Many dialogues delivered through Munna’s character, though merely meant to invoke sympathy for the character, highlighted relevant points that needed to be talked about and offered food for thought to audiences.
