What Is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition, where patches, darker than the normal skin color, start to appear. This is due to excess of melanin, a brown colored pigment the skin produces. Hyperpigmentation can effect anyone, and as it’s harmless (with no side effects), there’s no need to worry.

3 Causes Of Hyperpigmentation Besides Melanin

1. Hormonal Changes And Conditions

High chances are, this skin condition can effect anyone with hormonal imbalance. Women with PCOS, PCOD and women during pregnancy, especially during the last months.

Those with PCOS have higher levels of insulin, which at times cause patches of darkened skin on/back of the neck, under the arms, and in the groin area.

During pregnancy as the hormones change, there is a condition called Melasma, characterized by brown patches or freckle-like spots, which is basically pigmentation. These patches often appear on the face and stomach. This can happen postpartum too.

2. Excessive Sun Exposure

Excessive exposure to the sun causes ‘sunspots’ in the long term. If this is the cause, then the main areas effected are the face, neck, hands. Basically all the places exposed to the sun. That’s why they say sunscreen is of high importance!

3. Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

If you have a rash, acne, or any injury, then in the long term can cause hyperpigmentation, after they’ve healed.

If you have this condition, worry not as you’re not alone. Many others will be able to relate. It’s a natural phenomenon and is easily treatable. So, consult a dermatologist for the best possible advice and treatment!
