Instagram is rolling out a new feature designed with younger users in mind: Teen Accounts!
Instagram is taking a significant step to enhance safety and control for younger users with the launch of Teen Accounts. This new feature is crafted to provide a more secure social media experience for users aged 13 to 17, while offering parents better oversight and peace of mind. With a focus on built-in protections and comprehensive parental controls, Instagram aims to ensure that teens can enjoy their online time while staying safe from potential risks.

1. Default Privacy And Messaging Restrictions
Instagram Teen Accounts automatically come with enhanced privacy settings to ensure a safer experience for younger users. All teen accounts are set to private by default, meaning only those who have been approved by the teen can follow them and view their content. This feature helps prevent unwanted interactions by restricting who can see and engage with their posts. Additionally, Instagram enforces strict messaging restrictions; teens can only receive messages from accounts they follow or have existing connections with. This approach reduces the risk of receiving unsolicited or harmful messages from strangers, promoting a more secure messaging environment.
2. Strict Sensitive Content Controls
To protect teens from encountering inappropriate content, Instagram Teen Accounts are placed under the strictest sensitive content control settings. This means that teens will see fewer posts that feature violent or graphic imagery, such as fights or cosmetic surgery promotions, in their Explore and Reels feeds. Instagram’s proactive approach in filtering out sensitive or mature content aims to create a browsing experience that is more suitable for younger audiences, ensuring that the content they interact with aligns with their age and maturity level.
3. Interaction Limits And Anti-Bullying Measures
Teen Accounts feature specific interaction limits to protect against unwanted or harmful engagement. Teens can only receive tags or mentions from accounts they follow, which prevents interactions from unknown or potentially harmful users. Instagram also activates the strictest version of the Hidden Words feature for Teen Accounts. This tool automatically filters out offensive language and phrases from comments and direct message requests, protecting teens from cyberbullying and abusive language. These measures foster a positive online environment and reduce the risk of negative interactions.
4. Time Management Tools
Instagram introduces several features to help teens manage their screen time effectively. Time limit reminders notify teens after they spend 60 minutes on the app each day, encouraging them to take breaks and reduce excessive use. Additionally, Instagram activates Sleep Mode between 10 PM and 7 AM. During this period, the app mutes notifications and sends auto-replies to direct messages, ensuring that social media activity does not disturb teens while they sleep. These tools aim to promote healthier digital habits and improve sleep hygiene for teens.
5. Parental Supervision Requirements
For teens under the age of 16, Instagram requires parental permission to adjust any protective settings. To obtain this permission, teens must set up parental supervision on Instagram. This setup allows parents to review and approve any changes to the default protective settings, ensuring that these settings remain in place unless explicitly modified with parental consent. For teens aged 16 and older, parents can also enable parental supervision to maintain oversight and manage settings. This feature provides parents with the ability to approve or deny requests to change settings, giving them greater control over their teen’s social media experience.
6. Enhanced Parental Controls And Insights
Instagram has expanded its parental controls to offer more involvement for those who wish to monitor their teen’s activity closely. Parents can now view who their teen has messaged in the past seven days, though they cannot read the content of the messages. They can also set daily time limits for Instagram usage, ensuring that their teen does not exceed a designated amount of screen time. Parents have the ability to block Instagram access during specific times, such as at night, with a simple control feature. Additionally, they can view the age-appropriate topics their teen is interested in based on their content preferences. Starting September 17, Instagram will begin transitioning new teen users to Teen Accounts and will notify current users about this update. The rollout for existing users will start next week. Within the next 60 days, Instagram will implement Teen Accounts in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, with plans to extend this feature to the European Union later this year. Teens worldwide will begin receiving Teen Accounts in January. Instagram will also introduce these accounts to other Meta platforms next year.
