DCEU’s 13th movie, The Flash brings us Ezra Miller’s dual role, Michael Keaton returning as Batman and a new super girl. Find out if it’s worth a watch!

The Flash 2023, is directed by Andy Muschietti (director of horror hits, Mama & It) and scripted by screenwriter Christina Hodson. Its your run of the mill super hero entertainer with plenty of action, humour, an emotional core, Miller’s strong dual performance, a heavy Batman focus and a new Super Girl.
Does being a Batman fan count as being a DC one too? Or is that abominable for DC fans?
Either way, we went in with zero expectations, yes we had seen the odd flash cameo in a DC series or movie and had an idea of Flash’s character being endowed with super speed. Many believe he’s the DC underdog hero. In the movie Flash takes a hit at himself, saying sarcastically, he feels like the janitor of the Justice League. Do you agree? Let’s dig deeper into the new movie!
Sneak Peak Into The Plot
The movie started off with Barry Allen aka Flash being a socially awkward, criminal forensic scientist who is worried for his father’s trial. He has lost his mom to murder and now fears losing his dad on the false charges of being her murderer. Upon visiting his childhood home he is stirred by memories and emotions, flashing back in time to fix the one event that would bring both his parents back. What he doesn’t realise despite his friend Bruce Wayne’s warning is, how it will set the entire universe’s timeline in disarray, but Flash is willing to bet on the impossible.
He is clumsy, warm, funny with a heartbreaking past (after all, what is a hero without a painful past). He is convinced if he could go back in time which he does, he could fix it all. In a bizarre turn of events and the repercussions of time travel, Barry ends up occupying the same reality as his 18 year old self. Just as he is trying to sort out his affairs, General Zod the evil Kryptonian returns …
The plot catapults viewers into a whirlwind of superheroes and multiverses – but will our hero be able to save the day? And while doing it, will he have to sacrifice his family once again?
What We Loved!
If you are a Batman lover, prepare to be amused and thoroughly enjoy. DC brings back the majestic 71 year old Michael Keaton as Batman giving a hefty dose of nostalgia. It was not too heavy on action as per usual action hero movies and was predominantly Batman fighting all the main scenes. Some parts did have us wondering if we were watching a Batman movie or The Flash?
The banter and chemistry older Barry has with his younger self is entertaining, because one realises how obnoxious he is while the other one matures incrementally.
The movie had us whirling in a range of emotions – from comedy, sadness, bewilderment, amusement and a fun kick of nostalgia. It had a heart and soul to it too and was not just all action.
What Was Not So Great!
Sasha Calle as Supergirl was mighty powerful and she did full justice as Kara Zor El, the older cousin of Superman sent to earth to protect him but highly underutilised. She could have added so much more to the movie.
Though why did Supergirl’s costume look so much like Spider man’s?
That bit irked us a tad bit. The special effects and CGI were definitely lowkey in some bits and not as polished as one may expect from such a big-budget film. Don’t expect mind boggling new ideas or dramatic rethinking. An enjoyable watch but if you are now wary of time travel movies, then we don’t think The Flash would fare well for you. Many are even calling Miller’s casting a disgrace due to his numerous records of toxic behaviours, his harassment and abuse claims.
Punchlines Or Slapstick Comedy?
Some might think the punchlines were slapstick comedy but damn, they had us in fits of laughter!
Imagine the legendary Michael Keaton as Batman in his bat gear in his smouldering Batman voice: “You wanna get nuts? Lets get nuts!” The warm, funny, clumsy Flash prepping to fight off the mighty General Zod singing “Come on Barbie, lets go party” What a delight!
If you are a DC junkie, you probably would watch it regardless but if not, it’s definitely a fun watch with zero regrets! Showing in cinemas all over Pakistan now.
