From Salman’s mom dismissing Tanya’s fat-shaming to Sophie phuppo requesting Saif’s mom to put away the jahez, Kuch Ankahi is playing it so subtle yet so critical in laying down messages, calling out erroneous practices and telling us, it is this way, but it can be THIS way too – It’s all about choice!

Father -Daughter Conversation Won Our Hearts!
The father-daughter conversation between Agha Jaan & Samiya was the cherry on top of the latest episode. Heartfelt applause for Muhammad Ahmed Sahab for both performing and writing the dialogue exchange here with heightened sensitivity – the father who stands behind his daughter, attempting to persuade her with his love, wisdom and tenderness, yet, allowing her to make the final decision.

Not just that, but the narrative did not take the cliched blame game route where the mother is criticized for her regressive thinking – Agha Jaan simple drew a line between how daughters are allowed to evolve beyond their parent’s thinking and it’s okay, something Samiya needed to hear. And he did all this without painting Samiya’s mother in a bad light.
Log Kiya Kahenge is still relevant in 2023
Samiya’s own thought process revealed, showed many unsuspecting fans why she kept saying yes to the wedding – the thought of what people will say – log lya kahenge if she backs out of the wedding now, drawing parallels to her phoppo’s past history – something many of us had not considered as we kept blaming her for being stubborn, or overly obedient.
Sister Bonding
Again, the brief yet heart-breaking hug between Aaliya and Samiya spoke volumes! When sisters share a bond that transgresses words, they feel each other’s pain and they are willing to turn the world upside down, just to save each other. That’s what Aaliya and Samiya were all about in that moment.
Fat Shaming & Bari Display Messages
Taniya’s ability to laugh at herself and take her weight in her stride, despite her mother’s remarks in the previous episode just goes to show how young people who deal with constant criticism about their weight just learn to laugh it off, although it hurts inside. Salman’s mom telling the Rishta wali aunt that whoever likes Tanya will have to accept her exactly the way she is, was just so uplifting – needless to say, she seems to have become everyone’s dream Saas material overnight!

The practice of displaying Bari in some families is so commonplace that those who do it do not even realize that others might be uncomfortable with it, or that it is, in fact in bad taste. The drama highlighted the fragile line that divides us as a society between many who still consider it a norm, and many who find it visibly distasteful – Sophie phuppo vs Saif’s mom – the clash between the two mindsets brought home the point impactfully.
Salman & Aaliya -So Near Yet So Far!
Can Salman help sort out Aaliya’s dilemma vis-à-vis Samiya. Will she ever trust him enough to open up to him about her family problems? We hope she does although we realize it’s too soon and their relationship hasn’t reached that point yet. Even though we loved their rooftop run in, we wish the conversation had been more engaging, something didn’t quite hit the high notes for us. Is it that we expect too much from these two characters when they’re on the screen together?
Shagufta & Saif seem to be made for life and as the wedding approaches, we hope Samiya finds a way out. What do you think it will be?
Grey Characters
It is creditworthy for both actors and the script they have been handed that Shagufta and Samiya’s mom are many shades of grey. Were Shagufta calls Samiya to warn her and encourage her to call of the wedding, she also has a soft corner for her. Where Samiya’s mom is steadfast and stubborn in her decision to get her daughter married, she addresses Samiya in such an endearing tone that we are left with a slight doubt in our minds, can both these characters make us understand their motivations and be empathetic towards them?
No character is all black or all white in Kuch Ankahi and that’s what makes us relate to the narrative more, with every passing week. Even Adnan Samad aka Shakeel, who has designs on Agha Jaan’s house, makes us smile.
