Mitti De Baway may have Mahira Khan and Wahaj Ali at the centre of its story, but last night, it was Fazal Hussain and Aena Khan who had audiences talking.
There is something very interesting happening with Billo in Mitti De Baway. She is not penned as your typical heroine who simply falls in love, gets hurt and waits for someone to save her. She exudes a raw kind of power, she knows exactly what she wants, and she is perfectly capable of making her own decisions. But last night’s episode also showed us the other side of that strength – Billo is ruthless, she can be cruel, and she can hurt someone who genuinely loves her. And Baala was on the receiving end of it all.
Baala had fallen for Billo and he probably did not even realise how deep his emotions ran. The second episode gave us this sweet, almost innocent beginning to their relationship, with Fazal Hussain and Aena Khan making young Baala and Billo feel like two people who were genuinely drawn to each other. Their worlds were very different, but Baala never seemed to measure his feelings against her family’s status and wealth. So when he finally tried to claim his place in Billo’s life and she turned around and not only rejected his feelings, but made him feel small, it was a shocker.
Billo brought up his social standing. She reminded him of the difference between their families and ancestry. She spoke to him scathingly, and eventually even threatened him with the wrath of her brothers. Baala was devastated.
Baala returned in fury and reminded her that yes, perhaps he did not possess her wealth or the same social standing. But none of that meant he was beneath her in any way. In those few moments, Baala came across as a man who finally understood that loving someone does not mean losing your self-respect.
The Performances
Fazal Hussain deserves so much credit here because Baala’s anger and shock never completely erases his hurt. Even when he confronts Billo, there is still that sense of disbelief that he cannot believe this is the same girl he had fallen for. The performance works because he does not suddenly transform into a larger-than-life hero. He remains Baala, emotional, hurt and very aware of the difference between them.
And then there is Billo – clearly not the damsel in distress. In fact, she may be the person creating the distress this time around.
What made it work was the above par performance by both Fazal Hussain and Aena Khan that elevated the scenes from mere drama to an intense battle of willpower, restrained rage and shock that emoted across the screen so audiences felt the injury.
And audiences picked up on exactly that.
