Mitti De Baway finally premiered last night and, honestly, the first episode did not waste a single second getting to the point.
We went in expecting a slow-burn love story between Mahira Khan’s Billo and Wahaj Ali’s Baala, but instead, the drama opened with prison, revenge, a graveyard and a shocking attack. Within minutes, Baala was seemingly dead, leaving viewers wondering if the drama had really just killed off its male lead before we had even properly gotten to know him. The episode then jumped back in time, making it clear that there is much more to this story than what we initially see.
And then came the graveyard scene. Billo finds out that Baala has been released from prison and rather than waiting for their paths to cross, she sends a sharp shooter after him. What follows is a full-blown ambush at the graveyard, with several people losing their lives while Baala appears to meet the same fate. The scene immediately showed us just how far Billo has come from the young girl we saw falling in love with Baala. Audiences have been particularly intrigued by the contrast between the emotional young Billo and the cold, powerful woman she has become now. Even more striking was the moment she finally breaks her fast after learning that the attack has apparently succeeded.
But was it wise to kill Baala off right in the first episode of the drama? Technically speaking, the story has already provided us with enough hints regarding the fact that there must be more to this timeline. Indeed, the screenplay switches multiple years in time, and thus, the first episode does not necessarily mean the end of Baala. However, by letting us know the destiny of one of the main characters in such a way, the drama has changed the essence of the main question from the beginning. We do not wonder anymore about the future relationship of Baala and Billo but rather about how they became enemies.
And Billo? Ruthless would almost be an understatement. Mahira’s character is clearly not the soft-hearted girl from the flashbacks anymore. She has power, influence and, most importantly, a very specific reason for wanting Baala gone. What makes her even more intruguing is that the teasers had already hinted at a complicated and painful past involving relationships, loss and Baala’s return. Episode 1 finally gives us a glimpse of just how much anger is sitting underneath her composed exterior. The fact that she can order a deadly attack and then calmly break her fast makes Billo one of the biggest questions of the drama right now.
And if social media reactions are anything to go by, viewers were definitely not expecting Mitti De Baway to come out swinging this hard. From the cinematic opening and the intense graveyard sequence to Baala and Billo’s complicated equation, the first episode has already given fans plenty to discuss.
