In a groundbreaking moment for Pakistani sports, the country’s ice hockey team made its first-ever appearance at the Amerigol LATAM Cup. Competing in the international tournament in Coral Springs, Florida, the team represented Pakistan in an unprecedented move, marking its entry into the world of competitive ice hockey.

The Amerigol LATAM Cup is an international ice hockey tournament that brings together teams from across Latin America, the Caribbean, and other regions. This year, the tournament features 52 teams with over 1,100 players, including both men’s and women’s divisions, representing 17 countries and territories. Nations such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Greece, Israel, and Mexico are all competing for the top honors. For the first time in the tournament’s history, Pakistan has made its debut, showcasing the growing global interest in ice hockey and bringing new diversity to the event.
Building A Dream: How The Team Came Together
The formation of Team Pakistan was driven by Donny Khan, a senior director at the NHL. Khan had attended the LATAM Cup several times, watching teams from various countries compete, and envisioned bringing together a team of Pakistani heritage players. With the help of Umar Khan, a former NHL intern, the duo began the search for players. They reached out to potential candidates through word of mouth and social media, successfully gathering 18 players of Pakistani descent from across the United States.
Khan reflected on the journey, stating,
Every year I come here, I see this tournament growing. I just thought, ‘Why not Pakistan?’
Donny Khan
His passion and determination resulted in the creation of a team proudly wearing the green and white colors of Pakistan. The team consisted of players like Donny and his 14-year-old son Colton, Umar and his brother Siddiq, and Zaakir, a defenseman from George Mason University’s American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I team.
The Tournament: A Mix Of Defeats And Triumphs
Team Pakistan faced tough competition in their debut at the 2024 LATAM Cup. Their first match was against Chile, which ended in an 8-3 defeat. In their next game, they narrowly lost to Mexico Lobos with a score of 6-5. However, the team’s spirit remained unbroken. They rebounded and secured their first win by defeating Brazil 5-2. This victory was not just a win on the scoreboard but a symbolic achievement for the players and the Pakistani community. It represented the beginning of Pakistan’s journey in a sport that is relatively new to the country.
Meet The Team: Players Who Made History
Team Pakistan is made up of players who share a deep connection to their Pakistani roots. These athletes, hailing from various parts of the United States and Canada, came together to form a team that represents their heritage. The roster includes Donny Khan, his son Colton (the team’s only goalie), Umar Khan and his brother Siddiq (both forwards), Zaakir Khan, Tariq (a forward from Alberta, Canada), and Rohail (another forward). Each player brings their unique skills and a shared sense of pride in representing Pakistan on the ice.
Donny Khan has big dreams for Pakistan’s ice hockey program. He expressed his commitment to building on this historic debut and expanding the team’s involvement in international competitions.
We’re actually in conversations right now with the Winter Sports Federation of Pakistan, we have their official blessing. We’re trying to fully establish ourselves as a club and part of the sports federation of Pakistan.
Donny Khan
His long-term goal is to inspire the next generation of Pakistani athletes and eventually see a team from Pakistan compete in the Asia Winter Games and, one day, the Winter Olympics.
The debut of Pakistan’s ice hockey team in the LATAM Cup is more than just about winning or losing games. It is a story of passion, heritage, and breaking new ground in sports. With determination and support, Team Pakistan aims to make its mark on the global ice hockey stage, inspiring future generations of Pakistani athletes to follow in their footsteps.
