Pakistan has lost one of its most respected business leaders and philanthropists, Rafiq M. Habib.

Rafiq M. Habib – head of the House of Habib and founding chancellor of Habib University, passed away at the age of 88. Habib University, in announcing his death, remembered him as the quiet yet firm visionary who believed education must always serve the greater good. His loss is deeply felt across the worlds of business, academia, and philanthropy.
Born into the distinguished Habib family, Rafiq M. Habib carried forward a legacy of enterprise and responsibility. The House of Habib, under his leadership, grew into one of Pakistan’s most trusted business groups, active in banking, insurance, manufacturing, and industry. He was the kind of leader who saw business not just as a way to generate profit but as a way to build communities and institutions. Those who worked with him often speak of his humility, his steadiness, and his lifelong commitment to ethical leadership.
Building More Than Businesses
From the boardrooms of Habib Insurance and Thal Limited to his advisory role with Habib Bank AG Zurich, Rafiq M. Habib left his mark on Pakistan’s corporate world. He also guided ventures like Shabbir Tiles & Ceramics and served in consultative and advisory capacities with international institutions. Yet his career was never defined by business success alone – it was always paired with a sense of duty to use his position for the greater good.
Habib Public School – A Foundation In Education
Long before Habib University, the Habib family invested in schools that would provide quality education to generations of Pakistanis. Habib Public School, founded in 1959, has been one of the country’s most respected private schools, producing leaders in fields as varied as government, sports, business, and the arts. Rafiq M. Habib played an active role in sustaining and supporting the school’s mission, ensuring it stayed true to its vision of excellence and accessibility. For many families, Habib Public School was their first encounter with the Habibs’ dedication to education – a commitment that would later expand dramatically with the creation of Habib University.
The Dream Of Habib University
The crown jewel of his educational vision, however, came much later. In 2014, Habib University opened its doors in Karachi as Pakistan’s first liberal arts and sciences university. For decades, students who dreamed of a broad, interdisciplinary education had to look abroad. Habib University changed that, offering an undergraduate experience where philosophy, history, social sciences, computer science, and engineering could all be studied side by side.
The university’s dedication to accessible education is reflected vividly in the numbers: approximately 1,194 students are enrolled, and a remarkable 85% receive scholarships or financial aid. The student-to-faculty ratio stands at 12:1, with 100% of faculty holding advanced degrees, creating an environment of close mentorship and academic rigor. Retention and graduation rates – 95% and 80% (within six years) – further validate the university’s supportive and engaging learning model.
All students – regardless of their major – engage with a foundational Liberal Core Curriculum, covering subjects like sociology, history, Western and Eastern philosophical traditions, anthropology, and more. These core courses are integral to the degree and shape habits of critical thinking, ethical reflection, and interdisciplinary fluency.
Students don’t just learn – they contribute, publish, present, and innovate. Projects like IntellicropPK, designed by Computer Engineering students, featured at COP28 in the UAE, and other research recognized by IEEE, highlight the university’s strong research culture. Graduates also succeed across sectors – from tech startups like ConnectHear to roles at the UNDP, Unilever, GSK, and influential fintech initiatives.
While his contributions to education were central, Rafiq M. Habib’s philanthropy extended much further. He supported hospitals, vocational training centers, relief efforts, and welfare institutions across the country. His leadership combined business acumen with social responsibility, setting an example in both corporate and civic life.
Rafiq M. Habib lived a life of vision, service, and quiet determination. From the classrooms of Habib Public School to the buzzing intellectual life of Habib University, his belief in nurturing future generations stands as his greatest legacy. His passing marks the end of an era, but the institutions he built and the lives he touched ensure that his influence will continue for decades to come.
