Tackling unrealistic beauty standards, one Pakistani drama at a time! Sanam Jung is all set to play Mona, a plus-sized woman in ‘Pyaari Mona’ who has to listen to all the taunts and comments on her appearance aka body shaming (like every other slightly overweight woman in our society).
Actress Sanam Jung posted the first look of the drama describing why she took up this role and how challenging it was. “Playing Pyari Mona was quite challenging not only as an actor but also because our industry has very stringent standards of how a woman should look, especially when she’s the lead,” she wrote.
She went on to state that as an actor, it is her responsibility to pick up uncomfortable topics that are very much a real part of our society. “Body shaming ails every strata of our society. Sadly, women are being judged all the time for the appearance, particularly weight,” she stated.
It’s a pleasure to see Sanam Jung back on screen after her hiatus from acting. Her character seems bubbly, fun, and someone who accepts and loves just the way she is!
Sanam Jung will star alongside Adeel Hussain and the drama will air on HUM TV soon. The release date and the rest of the cast has not been disclosed yet.
It is refreshing to see our drama makers taking up a topic like body shaming which is very much present around us but somehow it is difficult to point out and put an end to it. Commenting on a woman’s appearance has become a norm and is ingrained in our society’s mindset. However, one of Pakistan’s biggest channels producing a drama that is tackling and busting these unrealistic beauty standards is a great start.
