According to multiple reports, American authorities are examining the AFA’s international commercial operations, particularly money that allegedly flowed through the United States banking system between 2022 and 2024. Investigators are reportedly tracing well over $260 million—and potentially more than $300 million—in commercial revenue generated through sponsorships, broadcasting rights, exhibition matches and other international agreements.
A significant part of the investigation reportedly centres around a Florida-based company called TourProdEnter LLC, which handled overseas commercial income on behalf of the federation. Authorities are now reviewing whether every transfer had a legitimate business purpose, whether banking regulations were properly followed and whether any transactions could amount to offences such as bank fraud or money laundering under US law.
Reports also claim investigators are examining tens of millions of dollars in transfers whose purpose remains unclear, alongside payments allegedly linked to luxury assets and third-party companies. Witnesses have already been interviewed, financial records are being reviewed and prosecutors are assessing whether the evidence justifies escalating the inquiry.
For now, though, it remains exactly that—an investigation. The FBI has not announced criminal charges, the US Department of Justice has not publicly accused the AFA of wrongdoing, and the Argentine Football Association continues to deny any financial misconduct. Its representatives have repeatedly urged people not to confuse an investigation with proof of guilt.
Another Headline For Argentina
Under different circumstances, this story might have unfolded quietly over several months. Instead, it arrives while Argentina are under perhaps the brightest spotlight in world football.
Their dramatic Round of 16 victory over Egypt was already followed by fierce debate over refereeing decisions, alleged missed fouls and accusations that the defending champions had benefited from favourable officiating. FIFA publicly rejected suggestions of bias, but the conversation never really disappeared. Now, entirely separate allegations involving finances have entered the picture.

There have been political disputes surrounding participating nations, widespread debate over refereeing decisions, questions about disciplinary rulings, criticism of tournament administration and even controversy over the unprecedented reversal of Folarin Balogun’s suspension after intervention from US President Donald Trump. Whether each issue is directly linked to FIFA or not, together they create a perception that football keeps getting pushed aside by everything happening around it.
Now, with the AFA facing a federal financial inquiry in the host nation, another uncomfortable headline lands on FIFA’s doorstep.
No, the governing body is not under investigation here. But when one of its flagship teams becomes part of an international financial probe during the World Cup itself, it inevitably reflects on the competition FIFA is responsible for protecting. Ultimately, the FBI investigation may conclude with criminal charges, or it may conclude with nothing at all. That is for investigators, not football fans, to determine. But one thing is already undeniable. This World Cup has become as much about the conversations happening outside the stadiums as the football taking place inside them. And for a tournament meant to celebrate the world’s most beautiful game, that may be the biggest disappointment of all.
