The Internet Thinks Falling In Love Brings Your Curls Back – Is It True?

Somewhere between TikTok edits, rom-com rewatches and collective emotional oversharing online, the internet has once again fallen in love with the “curly hair theory” — the idea that when a woman feels truly comfortable, safe or deeply in love, her natural curls or waves slowly start making their return.

And no, the theory is not claiming heartbreak magically straightens hair or that romance suddenly changes your genetics. It is more about what happens when people stop performing perfection. The sleek blowouts soften, the flat iron gets abandoned for a few days, and suddenly those natural bends and curls start peeking through again. According to the internet, the curlier the hair becomes, the safer and happier the person probably feels. Dramatic? Slightly. Weirdly believable? Also yes.

The poster child of this theory will forever remain Andie Anderson from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. At the start of the film, Andie is polished, controlled and impossibly sleek in that very early-2000s way where every strand looked professionally disciplined. But as she falls for Benjamin Barry (umm same) and slowly lets her guard down, her hair changes too. By the end, the softer waves and curls are impossible to miss. It is subtle enough that you do not immediately clock it, but once you notice it, you cannot unsee it. Her hair almost mirrors her emotional state — less rigid, less calculated, more honest.

Then there is New Girl and Jess Day, who basically exists as the human embodiment of soft waves, emotional chaos and unapologetic authenticity. Jess never really changes herself to become lovable, and her textured, slightly messy hair becomes part of that charm. Kat Stratford’s messy waves and textured hair perfectly fit her guarded-but-soft personality in 10 Things I Hate About You. As she slowly opens herself up emotionally, especially with Patrick, the styling becomes less severe and more effortless, almost mirroring the walls coming down.

What makes the theory interesting is that it actually says a lot about beauty standards too. For decades, especially throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, straight hair was treated as the “put together” version of femininity. Sleek meant polished. Straight meant professional. Meanwhile curls were often framed as messy, difficult or too much. So now, when people joke that falling in love brings the curls back, there is almost something deeper hidden underneath it. Maybe it is really about comfort. Maybe it is about not feeling the need to constantly control every detail of yourself.

And if we are being honest, there probably is a tiny bit of truth hidden in the exaggeration. In those beginning stages when feelings first latch on, when someone starts feeling seen instead of observed, people do seem softer somehow. The hair gets messier. The waves show up. The carefully maintained perfection slips a little. Maybe that is emotional security. Maybe it is laziness. Maybe it is just humidity.

Or maybe the curls were always there waiting for the right moment to breathe again.
