But who was Amar Singh Chamkila? Join us on a journey through the highs and lows of his extraordinary life, from his humble beginnings to the tragic end that left a void in the hearts of music aficionados everywhere.

1. Humble Beginnings

Amar Singh Chamkila, born on July 21, 1960, was a talented singer who found his calling in music from a young age. Despite working in a cloth mill, his passion for singing and songwriting burned bright. During this time, he started penning down his thoughts and emotions, giving birth to songs that would later define his career.

His big break came with the release of “Takue Te Takua,” a song that quickly became a sensation, especially in the rural landscapes of Punjab. This marked the beginning of his journey to stardom, and he adopted the stage name Chamkila, a name that would soon resonate with music lovers far and wide.

2. A Star In the Making

Chamkila’s journey in the music scene was quite the rollercoaster, especially when it came to finding the right musical partners. His first album with Surinder Sonia had its ups and downs. Sure, it did well, but Chamkila felt like he wasn’t getting his fair share of the pie, especially with Sonia’s manager, who also happened to be her husband, handling the business side of things. So, he decided to part ways and try his luck elsewhere.

He teamed up with Usha Kiran for a bit, but the real magic happened when he crossed paths with Amarjot Kaur. Now, at first, some folks doubted Amarjot’s vocal chops compared to Chamkila’s powerhouse voice. But when they hit the stage together, it was like watching two old friends having a chat. They just clicked!

It was like Chamkila and Amarjot had this Midas touch with every song they sang, they had this knack for turning every tune into pure gold. Soon, Chamkila’s “akharas” were the talk of the town in Punjab, leaving other local singers twiddling their thumbs. Chamkila and Amarjot didn’t just dominate the music scene in Punjab; they owned it.

3. The Elvis Presley Of Punjab

Over time, Chamkila’s popularity skyrocketed, earning him the nickname ‘Elvis Presley of Punjab’.Chamkila’s popularity soared to incredible heights, drawing crowds that would pack into open fields and climb onto rooftops just to catch a glimpse of him performing. His influence was so profound that families even checked his schedule before setting wedding dates, wanting to ensure his presence to elevate their celebrations.

What set Chamkila apart was not just his talent but also his business acumen. While other folk singers were charging around Rs 500 for local gigs, Chamkila was commanding a whopping Rs 4,000 for a wedding performance. His calendar was jam-packed, with him sometimes squeezing in multiple shows in different villages on the same day.

4. Chamkila Told it Like It Was, Despite the Risks

Chamkila was a singer and lyricist who poured his thoughts and observations into his music. His lyrics often delved into topics like infidelity, alcohol, and drug use, presented with a playful yet suggestive tone that reflected the realities of life in Punjab. His writing style had a certain fluency that captivated listeners, drawing them into his world.

However, Chamkila’s artistic expression was not without controversy. Against the backdrop of Punjab’s insurgency, sparked by the aftermath of the 1984 Sikh riots and the calls for the establishment of Khalistan, his music became a lightning rod for criticism. Many viewed his lyrical content as vulgar, especially those who supported or were involved with the then-active terrorist organizations.

The backlash against Chamkila’s music extended to threats on his life. He received anonymous death threats in the form of letters, prompting him to go into hiding for days at a time, seeking refuge in the homes of friends. In response to the pressure, Chamkila temporarily halted writing his suggestive songs. However, his passion for music and his commitment to his craft eventually led him back to his work, despite the risks and challenges he faced.

5. A Tragic Loss For The Punjabi Music World

The tragic events of May 8, 1988, cast a dark shadow over the world of Punjabi music. Chamkila and Amarjot, set to perform in Mehsampur, Jalandhar, were ruthlessly gunned down as they stepped out of their white Ambassador car, their promising lives cut short in an instant. Alongside them, two of their accompanying artists also fell victim to the senseless violence.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths remain shrouded in mystery and controversy. Despite the shocking nature of the crime, no official investigation was launched, and the perpetrators were never apprehended. This lack of closure has led to a proliferation of conspiracy theories and speculation.

One prevailing theory suggests that Chamkila’s growing popularity posed a threat to local artists who were struggling to compete, leading to jealousy and resentment that ultimately culminated in a deadly attack. Others speculate that Amarjot’s family, disapproving of her marriage to someone from a lower caste, orchestrated the assassination as an honor killing.

The aftermath of the tragedy further highlighted the complexities of the couple’s relationship. Amarjot’s family, unwilling to acknowledge her marriage or claim her body, left their son in the care of Chamkila’s first wife, who resides in Dugri.

Both Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh essayed the roles of Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila with heartfelt performances. The onscreen chemistry was undeniably in sync and many of the original songs were also rendered by the two actors which added miles to the watching experience!
