The Umbrella Academy
Season 1, Episode 1 review
We Only See Each Other At Weddings And Funerals

It starts off with an enigma, a lady who jumps in a pool suddenly becomes pregnant and gives birth on the floor, what’s more strange is, that there are 43 such women who gave birth at the same time, and none of them were pregnant before the day!
These newborn babies possesses supernatural powers and are unexplainably paranormal and miraculous
Based on a hit comic book series, the first few episodes give a terrific start to the episode with 7 of those newborn children adopted by a wealthy and anomalous old man named ‘Reginald Hargreeves’ who recognises the supernatural powers these babies possess. The episode subsequently jumps off ahead of time where they grow up into 30 years old deteriorated grown ups.
The scenes transition with sharp graphics and cinematography, in the background, a lady plays ‘Phantom of the Opera’, on a violin.
Let’s now introduce the characters defined by their numbers

Number 1: Luther, an astronaut having supernatural powers
Number 2: Diego, a knife-wielding professional
Number 3: Allison, possesses a communicative superpower into trapping people into whatever she wants to make them do
Number 4: Klaus, a drug addict, has majestic power to contact and communicate with the dead
Number 5: ‘Five’, a Future Time traveller with the conscious age of 58, stuck in the body of a 13 year old
Number 6: Ben, who’s dead.
Number 7: Vanya, who doesn’t posses any superpower, but plays a melodious violin
The Plot
The story pulls off with attention-grabbing swiftness, so get yourself some snacks and enjoy the terrific screenplay as all the children reunite to mourn the death of their father, (although it doesn’t seem any of them were really mourning). Moving on, we see that Dr. Reginald was a tough, strict old man, and never quite interested in parenting. Despite this, his funeral brought together all 7 children who were fighting among themselves when they reunite.

The drama continues against a darkening sky, a mysterious thunderstorm and lightning, to reveal a blue shiny anomaly. As Number 5 jumps back home (being long lost since 17 years), trusting only his sister Vaniya, he tells her what he witnessed in his time travels – a devastated, destroyed earth where he was the only one left alive. He discovers that the world is will end in 8 Days!
And that’s how we draw curtains on the first episode – in a puzzled suspense, wondering what happens next?
Why did Number Five trust Vanya, isn’t she just an ordinary being without any supernatural powers, the most soft spoken and polite? However Vanya remains a mystery, as she utters to Five, ‘I’ll put on a pot of coffee’ in a mysterious manner …what could THAT possibly mean? Could she really do something to save the world in 8 days?

The mystery runs deeper as we have yet to understand Vanya’s undiscovered super powers!
Umbrella Academy has us hooked from Day 1, so if you’re into fast-paced action thrillers, where saving the world and racing against time is your thing, then this show, with a super electrifying cast would definitely make it worth watching!
