A happening week in Pakistani dramas – but when is it not? From the overly dramatic to the mildly amusing, here’s your catch up moment on the week in dramas before the new episodes roll in!
In no particular order, we begin with a personal favourite, Zard Patton Ka Bunn!
1. Zard Patton Ka Bunn
Oh dear Meenu, you scored the sixer that The Pakistani Cricket team couldn’t deliver this week. Sourcing a pair of wheels to college and then fixing a motor on to the old thing is giving us goals! It is your sheer resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and determination – biking against all odds to desperately save your friend, gave us reasons to stay hooked to the screen this Sunday evening!
Meenu reflects all the young girls who just want to study! Is it that hard? Apparently so, in a country where most are married off at a young age. Meenu wants to become a doctor, in a country where doctors make up a ratio of 1 to every 1500 inhabitants (developed countries make up 5 to every 1500). Meenu will get her goal, but it is the journey we love.
Dr. Nofil’s pain was heart-breaking. Hamza Sohail essayed a vulnerable moment for a young man in the blink of an eye and boy was it moving. We felt the urge to reach out and console him, but another part of us now awaits his entry into Meenu’s world!
2. Gentleman
Munna drops the bhai and wears the suit. Where Gentleman amuses and attempts to de-layer our inner city mafias, the Robinhood war that wages on our streets daily, we’re still trying to figure out if the drama is all serious or all humour? Real Hard Talk, left out a bit of the “Real” & “Hard” and Munna seems to have played Zarnab into falling for him? But will he give up his weapons? Love makes us do strange things!
Faaris mian is a shade darker now and we suspect that Rs. 1 Crore has everything to do with Rehmati’s bribe.
Munna’s angrezi feels and shades kept us entertained, and direction cuts vis a vis the prison scene in parallel with Zarnab’s thoughts added the flavour in the episode. More was expected from the Hard Talk, it was a tad bland and did not hit the intensity mark for us, what about you?
3. Jaan Nisar sheds light on human trafficking, but can Dua trust anyone now?
Nosherwan has found his heroine but thank Goodness, he’s going the rational way and setting up a meeting with Zunaira. Dua, how could you be so naive yet again, walking into a room to meet almost the same fate? Anyway, we hope the love story between Dua and Nosherwan is about to begin, seeing that destiny has planted her within his reach!
Sarfaraz you need to get your Karma and fast! We can’t wait for that one to come through sooner. Revenge is sweet!
4. Burns Road Kay Romeo Juliet: Hitting Home Runs!
Burns Road Kay Romeo Juliet has our heart! From navigating marital abuse to showing therapy and the responsibility of families to step in and protect their daughters, BRKRJ is hitting it out of the park. Farhaad wins as he employs modern social media tools to regenerate his business, and his mom’s conversation with the therapist, where her eyes glitter as she talks about a past life, pre marriage and post marriage for women is a “thing”. And post marriage is when life apparently stops for many!
Kiran needs to find her voice and Farhaad and Freeya need to connect sooner rather than later. We want some real Gen Z partnerships at the Pakwan where they both build it up to epic Biryani levels. Saqib is the capital T in Toxic, we hope he comes to his senses!
5. Jafaa: Hassan is keeping us on our toes!
He flips, but then he doesn’t. He brings her breakfast, and then he flies into a rage over honeymoon travels. Yet Hassan is a more restrained version of anger management we’ve seen in other Pakistani dramas heroes. This subtlety where we know something is wrong, but not quite what, is keeping us invested.
What’s the secret dadi is hiding in the locked room. Is it a person or a thing?
Andaleeb and Dr. Numair are about to be thrown together by Fate, or their parents. The rishta brigade is hard at work and Deebu’s dad is playing it very cool. Again, a subtle character who did not dramatically bemoan the loss of his izzat but is playing his daughter smartly, so far. Eventually, is this match going to be a forced marriage or a compromise if Moiz backs off?
Jafaa sets the stage for an intriguing story and one that’s set the tone for a different kind of tale. Hope this one keeps the tempo going.
6. Radd: Zain’s return is imminent and that completes the love triangle
It is fun to watch Emaan in full action mode – leading Salaar by the hand, bank account and all. It is characters like Emaan who set the stage for a shift in female narratives but often, they’re not given enough credit for the game-changing element they carry. Although Emaan is sure she’s not about to ever fall in love with Salaar, the burger scene cute-romance to the relationship.
That office scene with ghundas threatening Emaan was a bit overdone. However, Salaar getting a beating from Kamran’s goons was impactful and hit the mark. Will this episode draw them closer to each other? Zain’s return is imminent and that completes the love triangle about to begin in Radd!
Both Hiba Bukhari, and Sheheryar Munawar essay their characters with believability and great skill.
