3 Reasons Hurmat Is Making Us All Uncomfortable

The Fallacy: How Can a Father Be Wrong?
Girls being controlled and asked to be submissive in the name of protection is normal in many parts of society. The drama shows other girls, in contrast with Hurmat, who have the freedom to think and act as they like, and they are completely okay. The drama is thus making everyone avoid looking in the mirror. We are taking the avoidance route by saying, “But he is the father; how can he be blamed, or how can he be wrong? If he had not been so strict, Hurmat could have gotten hurt or done something wrong.” The comparison within the drama proves us wrong. Kenny and Fenny are not doing anything wrong and are living normal lives.
Challenging Blind Obedience to Parents
Parents are given utmost importance in our religion and culture, so when a child, especially a daughter, goes against them—particularly a father—our values are questioned. Our ancestors encouraged blind devotion and obedience to parents, no matter the cost. This has led to many people being unable to live the lives they want and to many girls living in prison-like conditions because they were not allowed to educate themselves, choose a life partner for themselves, or even work, just like Hurmat’s mother. So, seeing Hurmat stand up to her father bothers us. The distinction that needs to be drawn is between respect and unconditional obedience.
Refusal to Accept the Bare Minimum
Hurmat’s character challenges our notion of accepting the bare minimum because she refuses to do so. Tabish seems the ideal choice, but she is not happy, and everyone is telling her, “What else do you want?”, not realizing that maybe he has his own issues that might hurt Hurmat or prevent her from making independent life choices. Most importantly, Hurmat doesn’t want to marry him at this stage. Maybe later, after she has experienced a little more of life. Her real message is that being a good option is not the same as being the right choice now. So when a girl refuses to accept the bare minimum and demands more, society is not used to it and finds it difficult to accept.
