Parwarish dropped a bomb of an episode, yet again and we’re so here for it. Read on as we unpack what went down with two characters who made sure they held our attention this week!

Sameer and Aania in Parwarish: It's Not Okay To Not Be Okay
Sameer and Aania in Parwarish: It’s Not Okay To Not Be Okay

Aania – Our Hearts Go Out To You

A shout out to the drama for highlighting one of the most prevalent and extremely dangerous behaviours of self-harm in teenagers through Aania’s character.
How easy it is for teenagers to find something they can hurt themselves with – like a paper cutter. And her parents have no clue what’s going on in her mind.
Aania feels alone. Aania is a victim of bullying. Aania has no one she can turn to. Her family is breaking up. She feels guilty All this makes her think she deserves to feel pain, she deserves to be punished, so she chooses to punish herself.

Not just that, but a part of Aania is also pretending to be just okay with all the events around her – Wali leaving, her parents fighting, Amal not fully present to tend to her – all the people she depended on, her support system, is lost to her. Aania is possibly trying to save herself from the mental and emotional pain she doesn’t want to experience anymore. In the previous episode, we witnessed her breakdown on the staircase, her reaction to a moment that was intensely traumatic for the entirely family.

She is possibly dealing with the aftermath of that trauma – a coping mechanism to repeatedly tell herself and others that she’s okay.

In order to deal with the pain, a part of her is telling herself, “I’m fine, Wali leaving is not that big a deal.” Almost as if to protect herself from the mental anguish, and the feeling of losing the only emotional stability she really had around her – a brother with whom she had recently shared heartwarming moments, and who always reached out to reassure her that all will be okay.

Nothing is okay in Aania’s world, but she pretends it is.

Sameer – Everyone’s Knight In Shining Armour

Sameer highlights the silent trauma that seemingly “OK” kids go through, when the seemingly solid ground beneath their family foundations is shaken.

Wali leaving the house, seeing his brother-like cousin sleep on the footpath, Suleiman and Panna’s argument, Amal’s broken heart, and dada and the rest of the adults failing to do anything about the situation, is disturbing the equilibrium within Sameer.

Sameer isn’t just a character. He’s the story of every other household where young people lead need to anchor themselves to a sense of wellbeing, and that wellbeing comes first and foremost, from home. And if it doesn’t, there is a disconnect.

Parwarish Highlights The Truths

Today’s youth hides their grief behind fake smiles. They bury their trauma in silence. They carry the weight of:

  • Watching parents fight
  • Losing close friends
  • Household pressure
  • Academic pressure
  • Career anxiety

And to escape it all, they turn to:

  • problematic friends,
  • addictions,
  • dangerous distractions.

They drift away from home not because they want to, but because they don’t feel seen or safe at home.
⠀
And just when they need understanding the most, they’re blamed, not heard.

Sometime they have to grow up too fast, just like Sameer is at present, but that growing up means a great deal of emotional baggage, unseen trauma and mental distress which is gradually manifesting itself in Sameer’s behaviour.

And that, dear folks, are the takeaways from Parwarish latest episode – a chilling reminder to keep our children safe, by communicating with them, talking to them and simply asking, again and again and yet again – Are you Okay?
