If you are a woman and even more so if you are a South Asian woman who has been married for many years, a housewife for years, placing your family above yourself and silently adjusting to all that comes with marriage, then there is a very good chance you saw a little bit of yourself in Beena during the latest episode of Aap Ki Izzat.

Aap Ki Izzat: Twitter/X Rallies Behind Urwa Hocane As Beena

What made this confrontation between Beena and Tabish so powerful is the fact that it was not just a wife confronting her husband who has done her wrong. It was a result of all those years of bottled-up frustration, disappointment, humiliation, and unanswered questions being let out. Beena was not only addressing Tabish but was voicing everything that many women feel over the years due to the societal pressure on them to keep families together and forgive.

And Umera Ahmed’s dialogues gave Beena the words she needed. There was something incredibly satisfying about watching her refuse to be intimidated by Tabish anymore. When he questioned the woman she had become, Beena essentially held up a mirror to him: perhaps she had changed because he had changed first. The conversation touched on everything that women are so often expected to overlook, the emotional neglect, the absence of affection, the humiliation of being taken for granted, and the sheer audacity of a man expecting loyalty and respect from a wife while failing to give her the same in return. Her words about respect being visible in a husband’s words and eyes hit particularly hard because that is precisely what Beena had been deprived of for so long.

What made the scene even more powerful, however, was Beena’s demeanour. Urwa Hocane didn’t play her as a woman suddenly discovering anger for the sake of a dramatic confrontation. There was a very particular exhaustion underneath everything she said. She was not screaming just to win an argument; she was talking like a woman who had wasted years trying to explain, compromise and wait, but realizing now that she had wasted those years doing nothing. Even as Tabish tried to wrestle back the conversation, Beena refused to back down. And the way in which her character changed has proven to be among the most interesting aspects of the drama so far.

There was also something deeply uncomfortable, and therefore effective, about seeing Tabish confronted with a version of Beena he clearly wasn’t prepared for. For years, he had been accustomed to a wife who adjusted, stayed within the boundaries he was comfortable with and absorbed his behaviour .All of a sudden, she started to ask questions instead of giving answers, challenge instead of soothing him, and deny his control over the situation. That might be the reason why it struck us so powerfully. In a patriarchal society, when women are taught to do everything they can to save their marriages, to see a woman stand up and tell you in her own way that she cannot allow being treated in such a manner feels very cathartic.

A huge shoutout has to go to both Urwa Hocane and Ahsan Khan for making this confrontation work. Urwa carried the scene with her words, her eyes, her anger and that finely restrained sense of hurt that made Beena’s transformation believable. But Ahsan deserves equal credit for doing something very different: he barely needed words. Tabish’s silence, his eyes, his expressions and the way his face changed as Beena dismantled his arguments said so much. He allowed the discomfort to sit there instead of trying to overpower the scene with dialogue, and it worked in his favour. No matter how much we may despise Tabish, and men like Tabish, we have to give Ahsan Khan full credit for making us feel that anger, frustration and disgust towards his character. And the same goes for Urwa: she gave voice to women sitting at home who have heard similar words from their husbands, who have been dismissed, betrayed, emotionally abandoned or simply made to feel invisible inside their own marriages.

The episode clearly struck a chord with viewers, who were quick to head to X and share their reactions.

still in awe of how well done the beena tabish confrontation was.
