Hello FUCHSIA readers! Today’s article brings you a surprise exclusive interview. Any guesses on who it could be? Here are some hints: Jafaa, Mann Mayal, and Bari Aapa. Keep reading to find out if you’ve guessed it right!

An Exclusive Chat With Jafaa Writer: Samira Fazal

We’re thrilled to have Samira Fazal with us today, the brilliant mind behind Jafaa. Known for her thought-provoking storytelling, Samira has given us dramas that spark meaningful conversations. Jafaa is no exception—tackling topics like mental abuse, physical abuse, and azoospermia, which we rarely see explored indepth on screen. The drama also highlights the power of Dua and shows how a man (Numair), even in his darkest moments, never loses faith in his wife (Deebu), but instead prays to Allah for inner peace. These elements not only bring something new to our screens but also offer comfort and deep reflection.

Samira Fazal’s scripts are celebrated for exactly this: weaving impactful stories that are thought-provoking yet not overly uncomfortable to watch. Whether it’s the emotional journey in Mann Mayal, the charm of Mastana Mahi, or the gripping narrative of Dastaan, she knows how to craft tales that resonate with viewers. And of course, we can’t forget her hits like Bari Aapa and Sanjha.

Today, we have Samira right here with us. Let’s discover the pearls of wisdom she’s ready to share!

One Thing About Jafaa That Samira Fazal Didn’t Expect But Still Happened?

Mawra aur Mohib ka track.

Samira Fazal

As a scriptwriter, Samira Fazal believes that while writing is crucial, the magic truly happens through the actors’ performances and the director’s vision. She emphasizes that once the script leaves her hands, it takes on a life of its own in the hands of the director and cast. Samira views this transition like sending a child off to school, where the director plays a pivotal role in shaping the final product. She firmly believes that even a weak script can be elevated by a skilled director, while a strong script can falter under poor direction.

For Jafaa, she expressed that she feels incredibly fortunate to have Danish Nawaz on board as the director. His passion and dedication to the project have been evident from the start, bringing out the best in the narrative. According to her, Danish’s connection to the subject matter made this project even closer to his heart. The drama explores sensitive topics and presents a unique angle on the traditional hero narrative, aiming not just to entertain but to educate. Samira acknowledges that Jafaa is not a typical commercial drama; rather, it carries meaningful messages woven throughout its storylines. This unexpected yet impactful reception has been a pleasant surprise for her, as she initially didn’t expect such a strong response for a project with a non-commercial essence.

But Wait, How Did Samira Get Into Writing?

Samira Fazal credits her journey into writing to the encouragement of Mohammad Ahmed Sahab. Being a proud Karachiite, she completed her Masters from the College of Home Economics. After getting married, she ventured into teaching. It was during her teaching career that her path took an unexpected turn. Mohammad Ahmed, known for his impactful work in the industry, recognized her talent after reading some of her initial writings. He saw potential in her storytelling and urged her to pursue it further. Samira, trusting his judgment, decided to take the leap into scriptwriting—a decision that eventually led to her becoming one of the most celebrated writers in the industry.

Mujhe kuch nahi aata tha, zero. Main unke (Mohammad Ahmed) ghar pohanch gayi, main ne kaha ab batao likhtay kaise hein?

Samira Fazal

Samira Fazal shared that her journey into writing started from scratch, knowing nothing about scriptwriting initially. After receiving encouragement from Mohammad Ahmed, she went to his house to learn the basics. He taught her the scriptwriting format and how to structure a script. Inspired by his belief in her abilities, she began formally writing and even submitted some of her work to newspapers, where she received positive feedback. Muhammad Ahmed further encouraged her to start writing scripts instead of writing for digests, which was becoming popular at the time. Following his advice, she began writing and her first drama project was Apple Pie.

The Changing Trends And Challenges In Writing

Samira Fazal reflected on how the industry constantly evolves, with trends and styles shifting every 10-15 years. When she began her career, there were only a few channels, and the industry was transitioning as new ones emerged. She was part of that transformative time. Now, as a new era unfolds, it takes time to adjust, but eventually, everything falls into place.

Main apne zehen me Gulzar ko rakhti hun, Javed Akhtar ko rakhti hun. Main kehti hun agar wo karsakte hein tou main kyun nahi karsakti?

Samira Fazal

Samira draws inspiration from writers-poets such as Gulzar and Javed Akhtar, using their success as motivation. Despite the challenges of adapting to change, she acknowledges that the new generation of writers brings fresh talent and perspectives to the field.

Samira Talks About Handling Sensitive Topics With Responsibility

Samira Fazal discussed the challenges of tackling sensitive topics in her drama Mere Ban Jao, emphasizing the importance of portraying such themes responsibly. She acknowledged that the subject matter was daring, and initially, there was concern about how it would be received. Despite these fears, Samira was determined to show the complexities of the topic in a way that would not be uncomfortable or inappropriate. She shared an example from the drama:

Main ne bas ye dikhaya k wo(Azmia) jab darwaza kholti hai tou usny ulti shirt pehni hoti hai, maa kehti hai ulti shirt kyun pehni hai? That was smooth and enough.

Samira Fazal

Samira highlighted the importance of not crossing boundaries, stressing that showing such moments without overexposure was key to handling the topic with respect. This careful balance in storytelling, according to Samira, was crucial in addressing sensitive issues while ensuring the audience could still relate to and understand the message.
