Will we ever be able to forgive Dobara for the damage it has done to the noble idea of marriage to an older woman or a younger guy? Can the makers live with the responsibility of discouraging many women & men from taking this decision?
Was Dobara meant to promote & normalise the idea of marrying a younger guy or was it meant to give a bitter reality check and wakeup call to all of us to warn us & consciously stop anyone from taking this step?
Can Mahir’s Behaviour Be Justified?
Can anything in the story justify Mahir’s behaviour towards Mehroo?
If it is assumed that his actions are a cover to take revenge from Nermeen, it just doesn’t make sense & such a ridiculous twist in the plot will cause further damage to the drama.
If it is assumed that he really did want to marry Nermeen but at the last minute, realises his love for Mehroo, can his cheating be forgiven?
Dobara at this moment has become a classic case of a brilliant idea gone to waste.
We Spotted 2 Positive Messages
Despite our disappointment, the drama sent out two positive messages:
1. One through Jehangir Sahib about “ghalati insaan sey hotee hai, mard ya aurat sey nahin”.
2. The other one through Mehroo, about continuing your name in the future. Even if you can’t have children, you can continue your legacy through helping out the ones already suffering in this world by means of a charitable action, just like the Jehangir Trust she set up.
We appreciate Jehangir Sahib as the voice of reason and caution in the drama.
A point to note for the production house, creators and script writers is to maybe consult focus groups & script doctors to ensure sensitivities are maintained, to ensure a great idea is not ruined unintentionally, & most importantly, instead of becoming a change maker, the story ends up hurting the very cause it aimed to address.
While society might not be very receptive towards such marriages, there are many, many examples of such couples who are living happily. So why couldn’t the drama focus on the positivity and give hope? Did we really need to see more sadness in an already harsh world?
The point to understand most is that, regardless of the ending, damage caused by the dialogues and execution is irreversible.
