SonyLIV has just dropped a bombshell with its latest unveiling: “Freedom at Midnight,” a magnum opus series set to redefine historical drama.

Drawing from the acclaimed non-fiction work by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre called Freedom At Midnight, this political saga promises to delve deep into the tumultuous era of India’s independence movement. Set against the backdrop of 1947, when the subcontinent was cleaved in two by its British colonial overlords, the series aims to unearth untold stories and pivotal moments from this transformative period in history.

Freedom At Midnight, Muhammad Ali JInnah

Produced by the powerhouse duo of Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani for Emmay Entertainment, in collaboration with StudioNext and SonyLIV, “Freedom at Midnight” boasts an impressive pedigree. Leading the charge is Nikkhil Advani, renowned for his directorial prowess and visionary storytelling.

Arif Zakaria, known for his portrayal of historical figures in films and series, is taking on the role of Mohammed Ali Jinnah in SonyLIV’s “Freedom at Midnight.”

Zakaria’s approach to portraying Jinnah is intriguing. He aims to present him not as an untouchable hero, but as a flawed and complex human being. He wants to delve into Jinnah’s psyche, exploring his motivations and complexities. It’s a method that promises to offer a more genuine and comprehensive picture of the man behind the leader.

Ira Dubey, known for her role in the Netflix series “Scoop,” steps into a new realm as she takes on the portrayal of Fatima Jinnah in “Freedom at Midnight.”

For Dubey, this role is a departure from her previous characters, presenting a unique and challenging opportunity as an actor. In the series, she explores the lesser-known facets of Fatima’s life, particularly her profound bond with her brother, Jinnah, and the significant influence she wielded over him.

Fatima’s steadfast support for her brother, standing by him through thick and thin, is a narrative that often remains in the shadows of history. Dubey is eager to illuminate this dynamic relationship on screen, offering audiences a glimpse into the pivotal role Fatima played in Jinnah’s life from beginning to end.

According to the creators of “Freedom at Midnight,” the casting process for the roles of Jinnah and Fatima was a meticulous endeavour, aiming to find actors who could authentically embody the essence of these historical figures.

Arif Zakaria stood out immediately for his commanding presence, characterized by his gaunt stature, towering presence, and piercing gaze. His voice, with its baritone and clipped British accent, encapsulated the very essence of Jinnah. It was these qualities that made Zakaria the natural choice for the role, his portrayal breathing life into the character’s persona and historical significance.

Similarly, Ira Dubey was chosen for her ability to effortlessly exude the grace and strength synonymous with Fatima Jinnah. Her performance captured the essence of Fatima’s personality and her pivotal role in history. Dubey’s dedication and talent shone through, making her the perfect fit for the character.

Opinion

“Jinnah despised India’s masses. He detested the dirt, the heat, and the crowds of India. Gandhi traveled to India in filthy third-class railway cars to be with the people. Jinnah rode first-class to avoid them. Where his rival made a fetish of simplicity, Jinnah reveled in pomp. He delighted in touring India’s Moslem cities in princely processions, riding under victory arches on a kind of Rose-Bowl-style float, preceded by silver harnessed elephants and a band booming out “God Save the King”—because, as Jinnah observed, it was the only tune the crowd knew.”

Excerpt from Freedom At Midnight

As a Pakistani, having to watch a critical part of our history being related by our neighbours across the border stirs up a mix of emotions. And yeah, there’s a hint of anger in there too.

Jinnah – Pakistan’s Quaid-e-Azam, will allegedly be painted in a certain light – as an elitist who couldn’t stand rubbing shoulders with the common folk. And unlike Gandhi, who was all about simplicity and getting down in the dirt with the masses. Can creating such a shallow version of layered historical figures to perhaps fan nationalistic fervour in a country (that has no shortage of it) and attempt to undermine Jinnah’s dignity, can be visualized as a blatant attempt to trivialize and even blemish his vision and his struggles?

What might rile many Pakistanis is the debate over who gets to decide how we remember our heroes?

Narratives based in History with real life figures as the main protagonists, are not just about facts and figures; they’re about shaping perspectives, setting the tone, adding nuances that might or might not align organically with the person being portrayed onscreen. How the narrative is shaped largely depends on who’s holding the pen.

Sure, historical figures like Jinnah weren’t perfect. They were human and thus, carried their flaws and contradictions. But they were products of their time, shaped by their circumstance – their struggles, and their triumphs.

Will Freedom At Midnight’s Jinnah merely serve as one interpretation among many?

Or will it take on a pivotal role in redefining a personality who is larger than life for Pakistanis and whose depiction might be in great conflict to how his nation knows and loves him?

Perhaps one way of looking at yet another project (and there have been many), that casts Jinnah at the centre of its storytelling, is to acknowledge that the founder of our nation has continued to impress, confound and intrigue global historians and filmmakers over the years due to his formidable personality – his ability to stonewall his opposition and remain steadfast in his objective to win a homeland for Muslims in pre partition India, his obstinacy, sartorial flair, eloquence and ability to hobnob with the British yet, stay his ground on principles, made him a friend and foe to be reckoned with.

As Pakistanis, we have to recognize that ultimately, the story of Jinnah will be told and retold multiple times, by multiple storytellers. But in between all the narratives, will emerge a man who achieved the impossible, and the miraculous – that is the lone truth no storyteller can deny, and one that cannot be skewed, altered or brushed over.

In this truth lies Jinnah’s victory, and the victory for all of us.
