Pakistani dramas possess a magical charm, spinning narratives that entwine themselves with the hearts of viewers worldwide. From the quaint streets of Karachi to the lush valleys of Punjab, these stories journey through cultural landscapes, resonating deeply with audiences far and wide. In recent years, the industry has undergone a metamorphosis, welcoming the formula of sequels to revisit cherished stories, a trend that has sparked newfound excitement and discourse among fans and critics alike.

Sequel Pe Sequel – Are Pakistani Dramas Stuck In A Loop Or Drama Makers Running Out Of New Stories?

Pakistani dramas traditionally wrap up as standalone series. However, there’s been a noticeable shift in this formula for a few years, with several producers opting to breathe new life into hit dramas by commissioning additional seasons. Notably, three immensely popular projects—Parizaad, Ishq Murshid, and Tere Bin—have recently received the green light for second seasons, signaling a departure from the industry’s usual conventions.

Some Successful Pakistani Drama Sequels

GEO TV’s legendary drama Khuda Aur Mohabbat stands as a beacon among the pioneers of Pakistani drama sequels. Over three captivating seasons, viewers embarked on a journey with Hammad-Imaan & Mahi-Farhad, characters whose love story defied societal norms. Hashim Nadeem’s exquisite storytelling wove a tale that resonated deeply, transcending boundaries and entertaining audiences with its portrayal of love amidst the complexities of society. With each season helmed by different directors, the series offered a fresh perspective while retaining the essence that endeared fans to the saga.

Another groundbreaking series, Suno Chanda, revolutionized Ramzan television. Across two delightful seasons, viewers were drawn into the world of Ajiya and Arsal, characters whose antics and affection struck a chord with audiences on a higher level. From the intricacies of familial dynamics to thought-provoking reflections on contemporary issues, the series had a perfect balance of humor and heartfelt moments, leaving an unforgettable imprint on viewers’ hearts.

It would be really unfair to not mention the Baraat Series while discussing about sequels/seasons because it was a major hit of its time. Every season, from Aazar Ki Ayegi Baraat to Annie Ki Ayegi Baraat, was a true success. The Baraat series is, kind of, the biggest blockbuster in terms of sequels that maintained momentum, comedy, and characters throughout its run. We miss them, and a little more when it comes to the fashion designer Saima Chaudhary!

Similarly, Fairytale delighted our screens with its whimsical charm, offering viewers a dose of lighthearted fun with Farjad & Umeed. After capturing our hearts with its initial run, news of a second season quickly followed the finale. While the season didn’t quite capture the same emotional depth as its predecessor, it still managed to uphold the essence of the sequel formula, providing fans with an enjoyable continuation of the story.

However, amidst the excitement for familiar sequels, surprises emerged as unexpected announcements were made regarding the return of Parizaad, Ishq Murshid, and Tere Bin. The burning question on many minds is whether these sequels are truly necessary.

Upcoming Sequels Of Some Mega-Hits!

Ishq Murshid ended, leaving viewers not anticipating a sequel due to its apparent finality. However, in an interview with SAL Ahmed, writer Abdul Khaliq Khan shed light on the upcoming season. He revealed that sometimes the story itself compels further exploration, as was the case with Ishq Murshid. Khan expressed that the characters and storyline compelled him to continue crafting a fictional world around them. Ishq Murshid, he emphasized, is a series of writings conceived by him, with three stories in total. The first story, already viewed by audiences, depicted a man facing obstacles in pursuit of his love. Khan disclosed that the upcoming second season will revolve around a boy navigating hurdles and sacrifices for the sake of a close blood relationship. Transitioning to the third season, he stated that it will delve into the theme of Allah’s love, often referred to as the true ‘Ishq’.

Parizaad, a gripping drama, wove the story of a young man going through the harsh difficulties of societal pressures and personal identity. As the protagonist grappled with his inner demons and societal expectations, audiences found themselves drawn into his tumultuous journey of self-discovery. The series garnered widespread acclaim, culminating in its final episode being showcased in cinemas. During the finale of Ishq Murshid, Duraid Qureshi, the CEO of HUM Network, electrified audiences by unveiling plans for Parizaad Season 2. Scheduled to grace screens in the upcoming year, the announcement sparked waves of excitement among fans eagerly anticipating the continuation of Parizaad’s story.

However, amidst the excitement, a lingering question persists: was the sequel truly warranted? Will it delve deeper into Parizaad’s journey, unraveling new challenges and complexities? Will it be able to do justice with Parizaad season 1?

Tere Bin captivated audiences with its heartfelt storyline, centered around the lives of Meerab and Murtasim. The series ended on a quiet concluding note, depicting the couple welcoming a baby girl into their lives, hinting at a happily ever-after. However, despite the conclusive ending that left no apparent room for a sequel, producers Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi surprised fans by announcing Tere Bin Season 2 on Twitter. The announcement featured Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi as the lead actors.

When discussing Pakistani dramas, sequels, and the decisions of drama makers, it’s essential to acknowledge the diversity of storylines and characters emerging in the industry now a days. Dramas like Gentleman, Zard Patton Ka Bunn, Inspector Sabiha, Burns Road Kay Romeo Juliet, and many others offer refreshing narratives and unique character portrayals. However, amidst this array of original content, concern arises regarding the necessity of sequels, particularly when the original storyline concludes satisfactorily. Despite the availability of fresh ideas and compelling new narratives, the industry’s inclination towards sequels without clear justification remains a topic of debate among viewers and critics alike.

Undoubtedly, fans are awaiting the reunion of Shibmeer, Meerasim, and Parizaad-Annie, longing to witness them together on screen once again. But, amidst this, a pertinent query emerges: Is the industry short on more diverse storylines and characters, or does it prioritize views over the audience’s right to get new and original content? Finally, are sequels an easy way out for creators to capitalise on a successful story line and onscreen pairing merely for monetary gains?
