Badar Mehmood has been a prominent figure in the Pakistani entertainment industry for over a decade, carving out a name for himself as a talented director. He has earned acclaim for his projects, which showcase his storytelling abilities and creative vision. Some of his famous works include the popular dramas Dunk, Balaa, Cheekh, and Mein.

Recently, he took on the chair for Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum, which marked Fahad Mustafa’s return to television screens after a decade. Together, they delivered a bang that has garnered worldwide acclaim. Since then, Badar Mehmood has been receiving immense applause for his work, ranging from the cutting-edge frames to the high quality of visuals. Furthermore, the strategic placement of different OSTs at various points has won over audiences. All in all, nearly every detail has been loved by viewers, and we’re glad he’s with us today!

Let’s see what he has to say about Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum and more!

Why Badar Said Yes To Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum – The Story From The Director!

Script mere pass nahi aya tha. Dramas ki jo writer hain, Farhat Ishtiaq, I wanted to work with her, I texted her and she replied back positively.

Badar Mehmood

Badar Mehmood explained that, at first, he didn’t receive the script. Instead, he reached out to the drama’s writer, Farhat Ishtiaq, as he had wanted to work with her for a long time. When he messaged her, she responded positively, and they soon met to discuss potential projects. This collaboration began back in January 2022, and from then on, they started developing the drama. During those discussions, Farhat shared two or three story ideas, and together they decided on the one that eventually became Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum.

As they worked on the project, Badar received the script gradually, episode by episode. Each time he read two or three episodes, he found himself excitedly waiting for the next ones, drawn in by the way the story unfolded. This eagerness, sparked by Farhat’s storytelling, kept him involved throughout the process. It took nearly a year to finish the writing, with main plot points discussed now and then. However, detailed scene-by-scene discussions were rare. Instead, Farhat Ishtiaq would outline the major events and developments set to happen over the next few episodes, which often included surprising twists. Badar appreciated her unique storytelling style and praised her creative mind for the drama’s memorable scenes and unexpected turns.

The Moment Of Surprise For The Director Was …

Hamare zehnon mein ye tha k, usually it happens that aunt, uncle, father say things like these. But aesa nahi hua, wo ek surprise tha.

Badar Mehmood

Badar shared that one of the most surprising moments for him was during Sharjeena and Mustafa‘s interaction, where Sharjeena asks Mustafa to marry her. He explained that, typically, it’s the older family members—the aunt, uncle, or father—who step in to prevent such situations. This unexpected twist really caught him off guard and added a fresh angle to the story.

Why Did Badar Chose Four Different Locations For The Shoot?

Because we needed locations according to our needs. We didn’t get all of them in one place.

Badar Mehmood

Badar explained that they needed locations that fit specific requirements for the story, but finding all of them in one place wasn’t possible. So, they decided to divide the locations. Each scene required a unique setting, and his team—including the ADs, production, creative, and art departments—worked closely to ensure consistency across these different places. They used various lounges and rooms to shoot different scenes, yet the team made sure to maintain the same mood and feel across these locations.

The Beauty Of Balanced Characters & Real-Life Connections – Badar Mehmood Talks About KMKT & Why Is It So Relatable With The Audiences!

Best baat ye hai k, unhon (Farhat Ishtiaq) ne na white likha na black. Har character ko unhon ne bohat balanced rakha. Mujhe aesa lagta hai jo logon ne itna relate kia isliye kyun k aam zindagi mein hum aese hi hain.

Badar Mehmood

Badar shared that both he and the writer, Farhat Ishtiaq, had certain ideas in mind when it came to addressing relatable themes like life, love, relationships, and personal thoughts. He explained that one of the story’s greatest strengths was its relatable portrayal of characters, showing them in shades of both positive and negative traits—neither entirely “black” nor “white.”

For example, Adeel’s character isn’t portrayed as entirely negative; he has done questionable things, yet he always looked out for his parents. By presenting characters in this balanced way, the drama felt authentic and allowed viewers to relate more deeply, seeing pieces of real-life complexity in each character.

3 Different OSTs For One Drama … Why?

Because we made it into seven stages of love. The need is that the emotions of 7 stages are different, we cannot play the same song on all the emotions.

Badar Mehmood

Badar explained that the idea of using three different OSTs stemmed from the drama’s focus on the seven stages of love. They divided these stages and assigned specific OSTs to match the unique emotions of each phase. Since the feelings in each stage are distinct, it wouldn’t have been effective to use the same song throughout. Instead, they crafted different OSTs to align with the varying emotions across the journey. The concept initially came from Fahad Mustafa, and later, the entire team—including the art and creative teams—sat together to bring this vision to life.
