Hajra Yamin performs beautifully and wins over critics and audiences alike in the latest episode of Doctor Bahu. However, the hug between Minna and Amber raises a few questions. Here’s a breakdown of why the scene apparently shwoing two women seeking solace in each other for their individual pain was a problematic message to send out in a narrative that could have played it with more sensitivity.

Does the comfort of Amber’s hug whitewash her previous acts? She was party to the cheating with Faizan. Do we really want her to be the one comforting Minna?
Did Minna have to break down in front of Amber, of all people — the one person who was partly responsible for bringing her to this point?
Women supporting women is a worthy cause and should be encouraged. But support from someone who acted selfishly and played a role in Faizan’s betrayal may be the kind of sympathy Minna would be better off without. This softens characters like Amber, and makes them appear more sympathetic, even serving to whitewash their wrongdoing while weakening the sense of Minna’s pain and self-respect.
Also, this storyline of two people being wronged in the same way and then drawing towards each other to seek comfort in isolating circumstances – often with the women being the victim and the men being the ones causing the injury, has enacted multiple times. We need to move away from this narrative and be sensitive about how we frame victims and oppressors onscreen.
Now that Minna is aware of the reality, and the fact that Faizan is truly close to Amber — should she leave him, or still put up a fight?
