Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy that few in Indian cinema can match.

Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol in Punjab in December 1935, he showed early promise when he won a talent contest organized by Filmfare, which brought him to Bombay (now Mumbai). He made his film debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Over a career that lasted more than six decades, he acted in more than 300 films, showing both his love for acting and his lasting popularity.
Dharmendra was known for how versatile he was – as comfortable in romantic roles as he was in action. He won people’s hearts in gentle comedies like Chupke Chupke and delivered unforgettable performances in high-energy films like Mera Gaon Mera Desh. His most iconic role was probably Veeru in Sholay (1975), a character that remains etched in the memories of generations.
Later in his career, he transitioned into more mature character roles. Even in his seventies and eighties, he continued to act, appearing in films like Life in a… Metro, Johnny Gaddaar, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and more recently in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani (2023) and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024). His final film, Ikkis, is scheduled to release posthumously.
Beyond acting, Dharmendra also served in politics. He was elected to India’s Parliament as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and served from 2004 to 2009. In recognition of his artistic contribution, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
On the personal side, Dharmendra leaves behind a large and celebrated family. He was married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had two sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, both of whom became actors. He was also married to his longtime co-star Hema Malini, and together they had two daughters, Esha and Ahana.
His passing has sparked an outpouring of grief across the film industry and beyond. Many describe his death as “the end of an era,” noting how rare it is for one actor to have remained so relevant and beloved across so many decades.
When people remember Dharmendra, they think of more than just his films. They remember his kindness, his hard work, and the special energy he brought both on and off the screen. He was a true hero – not only for the characters he played, but for the person he truly was.
May he rest in peace.
