In Jafaa, Hassan is a masterclass in masked domestic violence. What starts off as seemingly harmless possessiveness quickly spirals into a harrowing story of control and abuse that every viewer needs to follow.

Hassan: The Red Flags Of Domestic Abuse In Jafaa

Hassan, portrayed by Mohib Mirza in the drama Jafaa, is a character who raises instant alarm bells from the very beginning. His over-possessive nature and aggressive tendencies towards his wife, Zara, highlight significant issues of domestic abuse. From the early stages of their relationship, Hassan’s behavior signaled clear red flags, showing his frustration and anger when Zara did not respond to him as he desired. This article delves into the various instances where Hassan’s behavior exemplified a deeply troubling pattern of abuse, rooted in his past traumas and masked by superficial romantic gestures.

Hassan’s aggressive nature can be traced back to his unresolved childhood traumas. We know that his mother left his father, but there are hints that the story might be different from what Hassan believes. His grandmother (Dadi) might be hiding the complete truth, which could explain Hassan’s possessive and controlling behavior. This background sets the stage for the toxic dynamics in his marriage with Zara, as Hassan’s unresolved issues manifest in increasingly harmful ways.

Here’s a timeline of abusive behaviour that revealed glimpses of problematic behaviour, albeit in a grey-shaded character, except for the keen eye who could have instantly spotted the abuser within.

1. The Silent Manipulator: Early Passive-Aggressive Behavior

Before marriage, Hassan displayed passive-aggressive behavior by not answering Zara’s calls if she didn’t respond promptly. He would go quiet and act off but wouldn’t outright get angry at her. Instead, he made sure Zara knew he was upset, manipulating her emotions subtly to make her feel guilty and responsible for his mood swings.

This behavior set a troubling precedent, as Hassan’s silent treatment and mood swings served as early indicators of his controlling nature. many viewers would be familiar with this behaviour trait, but of course Zara, the victim, was unaware of his troubling traits. True to life much?

2. Undermining Traditions: The Maklawa Incident

In the early days of their marriage, during the traditional Maklawa ceremony where the bride stays with her parents, Hassan interfered and rejected Zara’s parents’ request for her to stay over. He initially refused outright and then softened his tone, saying he would miss her, masking his control under the guise of romantic longing. This incident highlighted Hassan’s need to assert dominance, even over cultural practices, by manipulating his tone to appear loving while simultaneously exercising control over Zara’s autonomy.

3. Isolation Tactics: Locking Zara in a Room

One of the first significant acts of physical intimidation occurred when Hassan locked Zara in a room overnight because she visited her cousin against his wishes. Despite his grandmother advising Zara against frequent visits to her cousin, (in a way, validating Hassan’s controlling nature), Hassan’s reaction was extreme. This was a clear act of emotional and psychological abuse, meant to isolate and control Zara. The incident left Zara, an empowered working woman, feeling helpless and trapped, signaling a dangerous escalation in Hassan’s abusive behavior.

4. Violent Outbursts: Destroying Zara’s Belongings

Hassan’s anger issues escalated when he smashed Zara’s phone when he felt he didn’t have control over Zara’s actions. Later, he also destroyed a laptop. This act of destruction was a display of power and control, intending to intimidate Zara into submission. He reacted violently after an interrogation about his mother, showing his tendency to react and ‘flip’ to perceived threats to his authority. By breaking Zara’s belongings, Hassan sent a clear message of dominance, leaving Zara in a state of constant fear and anxiety.

Promptly gifting her a new phone was also a red flag, in a way. Abusers do that often when they want to convince their victim (and themselves) that they are, after all, caring human beings, and wouldn’t fly into a temper if not provoked – victim blaming?

5. Physical Intimidation: Pushing Zara Against the Wall (By Accident)

Incidents of physical abuse escalated with Hassan (accidentally) pushing Zara against a wall during an argument, causing her to hurt her forehead. This incident led Zara to call her parents and temporarily leave Hassan, recognizing the danger he posed. However, Hassan and his grandmother managed to convince her to return, showing how abusers often manipulate and emotionally blackmail their victims into staying. Abusers commonly use this cycle of abuse and reconciliation to maintain control over their victims, making it difficult for them to leave permanently.

6. Public Aggression: Assaulting Strangers in Nathiagali

Hassan’s aggressive tendencies were further displayed during a trip to Nathiagali, where he assumed that some boys were taking pictures of Zara and ended up beating them. This incident revealed his inability to control his temper and his propensity for violent outbursts over perceived slights. Hassan’s justification for his actions—claiming he was protecting Zara—was a clear example of how abusers rationalize their violence as acts of love or protection, further confusing and manipulating their victims.

His aggressive behaviour also served to traumatize Zara, although he insisted that he had kept his cool with her and his anger was directed at the boys, laying claim to the belief that abusers are still abusive if they show aggression, or break things around them and not directly attack the victim. This is a common red flag of emotional abuse which is often explained away by our society as mere anger.

7. The Breaking Point: Physical Assault on Zara

The culmination of Hassan’s abusive behavior occurred when Zara confronted him about his lies regarding psychiatric treatment. The confrontation escalated, and Zara revealed she had been taking contraceptive pills to avoid having a baby in such a volatile environment. Hassan’s response was to slap Zara, and when she defended herself by slapping him back, he brutally beat her, leaving her bruised and traumatized. This violent outburst was a shocking escalation from emotional and psychological abuse to physical brutality, forcing Zara to confront the reality of her situation.

Recognizing the Red Flags And Seeking Solutions

Hassan’s behavior in Jafaa is a stark reminder of the insidious nature of domestic abuse. Many women endure emotional and psychological abuse, believing that as long as there is no physical violence, they are not being abused. However, emotional abuse often escalates into physical violence, as seen in Hassan’s case. It’s crucial to recognize the red flags of abuse early and seek help. Victims of domestic violence should reach out to supportive networks, whether friends, family, or professional services, to escape the cycle of abuse. Society must also play a role in providing resources and support for victims, ensuring they have safe spaces to turn to.

Ultimately, the solution lies in education, awareness, and zero tolerance for any form of abuse. Characters like Hassan in dramas like Jafaa serve as critical reminders of the importance of addressing domestic violence head-on and supporting those who suffer in silence.
