Moon Tae-il, better known by his stage name Taeil and formerly a member of the K-pop group NCT, has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison by a South Korean court for his role in the rape of a Chinese tourist. Here’s what we know so far.

The 31-year-old artist was convicted alongside two others, identified in court by the surnames Lee and Hong, after they admitted to sexually assaulting the victim while she was heavily intoxicated. The incident took place in June 2024 after the three men met the woman at a bar in Seoul’s Itaewon district, a popular nightlife area.
According to court findings, the woman had been drinking with the men before she was escorted into a taxi and taken to Lee’s residence. There, the three men reportedly committed sexual assaults while the victim was in no state to give consent or resist. Prosecutors described the crime as “particularly grave” given the circumstances, including the victim’s vulnerability as a foreign tourist in an unfamiliar environment.
The defendants were charged under South Korea’s special quasi-rape law, which applies in cases where the victim is unconscious or incapable of resistance and the assault is carried out jointly. While prosecutors had requested a seven-year sentence, the court handed down reduced terms after considering the defendants’ lack of prior criminal records, their admission of guilt, and the settlement reached with the victim, who later stated she did not wish to pursue further punishment.
All three men were taken into custody following the court’s decision. They were also ordered to complete 40 hours of a mandated program for sexual violence offenders.
Taeil had been suspended from group activities by his agency, SM Entertainment, in August 2024 when the investigation became public. The company announced his departure from NCT shortly afterward, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
Taeil debuted with NCT in 2016 and was associated with the subgroup NCT 127. The group rose to fame with their genre-blending music and international success, including appearances on global charts. His departure marked a significant fall from grace, with fans expressing both shock and disappointment over the charges.
The case has gained widespread attention and reignited conversations in South Korea about celebrity conduct, sexual violence, and the treatment of victims in legal proceedings.
