In a fun chat with Rabia Mughni of FUCHSIA Magazine, Qasim Ali unveiled fascinating details about the making of ‘Mere Humsafar‘ and explained the character arc of each character in the drama. Scroll down to know more about the drama!
Why He Decided To Direct ‘Mere Humsafar’
Qasim narrated the whole incident where he received the script only with the intention of rejecting it. However, when he read on. he was hooked on it and was surprised to see how the story progressed. Eventually, he decided to take it on.
The Struggles Of Directing ‘Mere Humsafar’
Qasim talked about the struggles of managing an ensemble cast. He had to work around the availability of each actor. It was difficult to shoot scenes with multiple cast members as he had to take care of the lighting and other technical factors. He revealed that it would sometimes take a whole day to shoot only one scene!
Characters In The Drama

Qasim Ali stressed that all individuals have a grey personality and it is imperative to manifest that on television as well.
He described the reasons behind certain actions of Shah Jahan and believes that she is not a negative instead, a grey character with many layers to her personality.
He also went on to explain Hala’s character in depth. He drew parallels between how Hala was a different person around her dadi and a completely different person when around Shah Jahan around. He praised Hania’s craft and the body language she adopted to essay Hala’s character which made her character look convincing.
He went on to dissect some of Hamza’s extreme reactions saying that it was necessary to portray certain emotions on screen and create an impact.

His Perspective On Direction
Qasim Ali made some interesting revelations about how he directs his projects.
“As a director I have to support the narrative and make sure the characters create an impact on screen.”

He added that his supporting actors are also very important to him and that he attributes the same significance to their scenes as to those of leads.
Furthermore, he also added that every project is treated differently and with different intentions. Some are commercial projects while some are created solely as art.
“Television is about commercial work and the fight between maker and financer is bound to happen.”

Lastly, he talked about his upcoming film ‘Tich Button’ and also concluded the interview by confirming that ‘Mere Humsafar’ will end in September. We will surely miss watching it, what about you?
