Unidentified gunmen opened fire on passenger buses in Kurram district – Here’s an update

Earlier on Thursday, 21st November 2024, gunmen opened fire on buses in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing at least 50 and wounding many others, many of whom are in critical condition. The attackers used automatic firearms on the convoys in the Ochut area; one traveling from Peshawar to Parachinar, and the other from Parachinar to Peshawar.
Medical teams rushed to the scene, transferring the victims to nearby clinics and hospitals for immediate treatment. Among the dead were reportedly women and children. The local government, police, and other authorities have expressed that the death toll may rise.
As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. This incident, targeting Shiite passengers, is part of an unfortunate pattern of sectarian violence in the region, raising security concerns in KPK and targeting innocent civilians.
Support and Outreach
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, offering prayers and condolences to the victims. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, describing it as an inhumane act, and vowed that those responsible would be held accountable.
Chief Minister of KPK, Amin Ali Gandapur, also condemned the incident and called for increased security measures. The provincial and local governments have enforced security measures in the region while continuing the search operation.
The tragic attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by KPK. As we reflect and think about the loss of the innocent lives, our thoughts and prayers go out to their families in this tough time. This is also a reminder that security measures need to be restored in the region, and the government needs an approach to combat sectarian violence not only in KPK but other regions too.
