Qarz e Jaan: Karma has played its card, the makafat-e-amal is taking place. The sweet and harmless Beenish lost her loving husband and her son as a result of her father’s and brother’s actions. The drama has audiences shedding tears, feeling apprehensive and most importantly, thinking about a lot of things. What is one thing that hit you the most?

A Round of Applause
What a heartbreaking and fabulous performance by Fajr Sheikh. The scene where she refuses to go down, and Nashwa and her mother are trying to take her to see Asad’s face one last time was heart-wrenching. And then comes the scene when Fajr portrays the excruciating pain of Beenish because her ex-in-laws have taken Hadi away from her, is another standout performance from her. Her portrayal of grief and helplessness managed to make audiences cry.
Although it was just one scene but Daniyal Aamir as Asad delivered a notable performance which revealed his true talent and potential. His reaction to Ammar, the minute details and facial expressions were all on-point.
The Build Up
The drama has been building up Ammar’s case consistently, silently hinting at the volcano that was brewing inside him, about to erupt – the lack of control in his life, the constant belittling, and no one to show him the way, guide him, or pull him back when he was doing something wrong. The story takes on multiple facets here. On one side we are shown how Ammar’s internal insecurities influenced by those around him eventually drove him to commit something barbaric and tragic. He was already involved in the rape and murder of Maheen but then killing his own brother-in-law and then displaying his dead body over the phone to his sister with no remorse is another level of inhumanity.
The other facet of Ammar’s character is that once a criminal shows no remorse, he will always be a criminal. It is highly unlikely that he will ever change, and his actions are not excusable despite the trauma he experienced. At the end of the day, committing rape and murder are decisions you take being fully aware that they are wrong.
Our Questions
Did Ammar take this action because deep down he knew his father will save him in the end? Is that why he unleashed this lunatic behaviour with zero restraint? In the episode and promo, we see Bakhtiyar trying everything to rescue Ammar.
We understand that Beenish becoming a widow and her son being taken away from her is the punishment that might serve the residents of Barkat Villa well, employing the theory that the only way to feel the pain of your misdeeds is when it happens to your own daughter.
But then this raises two questions: why should someone innocent like Beenish and Asad pay the price of Ammar and Bakhtiyar’s actions?
Will There Ever Be Hope
If Bakhtiyar and Dadi had been deeply affected by this tragedy and realized the error of their ways, this would be logical, but they have not budged an inch. It defeats the entire purpose of this twist and makes us question why our writers cannot give us hope. Bisma, Nashwa and Beenish, all these women, do they deserve what is happening to them? Would Allah give a tough time to someone innocent just because someone in their family was unfair or unjust? Or is this punishment for staying silent about Maheen’s murder and Ammar’s alleged crime? What about Bisma, will she never experience happiness? What did she do to deserve this? We hope the creators give us an uplifting plot twist or a glimmer of hope in the upcoming episodes.
The After shocks
We finally see Bakhtiyar feeling the pain of what happened to Beenish. But that doesn’t last long, and he is back to trying to rescue Ammar at any cost. Even when he is feeling sorry for Beenish, there is an arrogance in him. He tells his mother that other girls becoming widows is different, this is Beenish, his daughter. Barkat Bibi still hasn’t learnt her lesson either.
It is sad to see Bisma suffering. Seems like there is no peace in her life, although Bisma was the only sane person who advised Bakhtiyar to be careful with Beenish’s in-laws. It was good that the drama showed that Bisma’s subtle advice made Bakhtiyar and Barkat Bibi realise their actions are hurting their own children now. Sidra’s words were loud and clear. Shaming the mother and son duo for what they had done to Bisma for so many years.
Even The Innocent Suffer
While there are the obvious perpetrators of the crime, the drama also highlights a significant aspect, the repercussions of staying silent and the seemingly harmless bystanders. Sidra, Nashwa, Beenish and Asad, Asad’s family; if all these people had raised their voice, if they had joined hands, things would have turned out differently. They all kept quiet going on about their lives when Maheen was raped and murdered, and when Nashwa was married to Ammar.
The drama is representing what transpires in many households and many situations; when all of us stay silent or fail to speak up when we witness a wrongdoing. Qarz e Jaan is calling out all of us.
Our Thoughts
Two things which Qarz e Jaan could have done better:
- Beenish and Bakhtiyar sharing a bond or Bakhtiyar expressing his affection for his daughter, which had not been depicted earlier. So now we just accept their supposedly strong bond without question.
- What was the nature of Asad’s job and why would he suddenly check upon his in-law’s construction project; all this just does not make sense. This story twist appeared all of a sudden with no supporting narrative. We accepted it just because we wanted to see what Ammar was going to do but otherwise, this was a gaping flaw in the script.
Burhan and Nashwa are still the same. Nashwa not listening or paying attention to him and Burhan still trying to help her.
